I would add: amazing people! Those guys are really something working up there! And I cant even imagine what it was like in the early 1900s when safety measures where almost nonexistent...they looked more like acrobats than ironworkers!

i have a stupid question: why is there never a concrete core visible like in other towers, shanghai tower or the shard f.e.? isn't there any or what?

it's because steel rises first in this case, concrete follows..

Tower steel is now above floor 91. It is expected to top out by appx. April of 2012.
Installation of the 400-foot-tall antenna in spring 2012.

There is a reinforced concrete core, but they are erecting perimeter steel first. This shortens the construction time.

This is the same method they used to construct 7 World Trade Center, see here for an explanation:
