It has now been delayed by a couple of months.

They build at a pace of 1 floor a week and 2 weeks for Mechanical Floor and reached the 92nd floor by early January 2012.

For 2 months they were stuck at the 92nd floor due to high winds because of unseasonably warm weather, the steel company which made the steel for the building had some financial problems, and the 92nd floor being a Mechanical floor.

So it took 2 months to get that floor built.

So right now they are at the 100th floor. The high winds are still a factor but the steel fabrication company's issues have been resolved.

The remainder floors are Observation floors and have twice the height of the average floor. And so it will take them two weeks per floor.

So building should be topped by my mid-June.

The concrete floor and cladding should reach the top 3 months after that, so around late September or early October 2012.

Once that happens, work on the Spire can commence.

Creating the base for the spire and hoisting and constructing it should take a few months.

So by late december or early January 2013, the spire will be installed.

Simultaneously, starting in October 2012, work on escalators, elevators and other items will be begin and will take around 6 months or so.

So building will hopefully open roughly around this time next year.
Thank you, and everyone else who answered me! Glad to see the wait is almost over. I should be in New York from Mid-May all the way to mid-September, so I look forward to seeing this bad boy slowly progress.

Also, slightly irrelevant, but when will 4 WTC top out? Sooner or later than 1 WTC?

Honestly, I really don't mind that the corners are being squared off. In fact, I kind of prefer the tower with a square base, as it evokes the square base of the original towers. It will be interesting to see how construction progresses.

The originals weren't perfect squares though....they had chamfered corners. As did the original design for the base of One WTC.

I don't understand how this change is going to save money, the concrete and structure is already there all it needs is cladding..

Older one...

...and new one.

I agreed whit Uaarkson about the change has something to do with the feasibility of manufacturing those corner pieces, sadly. While those renders are accurate, we must wait until the cladding is done, but regardless the non chamfered corners, i'm more concerned about the radical re-design of the plaza entrance, which is a disgrace.

wow....this building is going from bad to worse....

first the west side promenade and now this.....

Historians will make documentaries about the construction of wtc1 and will talk about the sheer dismay how fear and infighting plagued the construction of wtc 1

this is so sad

It's a combination of fear and greed. They're being cheap, so they're putting up walls instead of stairs, and squaring off corners instead of implementing unique architectural features.

Yeah lets take caution and throw it into the wind, 2,996 people died the last time around its not fear its command sense to take every safety precaution as possible, and some people are saying they are being cheap the last time i checked 1 wtc is at 3.9 billion dollars and the prices that are going to go up on the bridges and tunnels for most new yorkers every dollar save counts.

If that is the case, then why even build WTC1? Wouldn't it be safer not to building anything in the first place. Your logic makes no sense.

The safety precautions have been taken but why go overboard to such a degree that it makes this such a desolate and uninviting place.

This building is suppose to show the world how America can come back after a terrible event and this is the best it could do?

Its political in-fighting, mismanagement of funds which has caused the cost to soar and not anything of value added to the building.

And all the while, they keep cutting corners like the horrendous re-design of the West Plaza and now the corners of the base. They might even re-design the spire as well.

Sorry, but I like to see a safe and strong building which is both beautiful and inviting, with modern and cutting edge architecture.

These new re-designs are having the opposite effect.
