Here is why:

Look at the original design. The whole place looks open and inviting, like a grand staircase where people can sit on the steps and have lunch take pictures and talk and socialize and admire the surroundings.

And now look at the re-design. Its claustrophobic. Its walled off with a steep edge. It has a narrow staircase where people can't sit and talk and eat and socialize as it will always be packed with people moving back and forth.

In essence, people can't mingle infront of this building. So people will be either be coming or going and never stopping as their is no room to stop.

That is what makes this re-design so desolate and un-inviting because it makes the people un-social as well.

Redesign of the west plaza.

I wonder how many of us guys are gonna bust our balls trying to walk through that excessive number of barricades around the modified plaza.

This building is suppose to show the world how America can come back after a terrible event and this is the best it could do?

Its political in-fighting, mismanagement of funds which has caused the cost to soar and not anything of value added to the building.

And all the while, they keep cutting corners like the horrendous re-design of the West Plaza and now the corners of the base. They might even re-design the spire as well.

Sorry, but I like to see a safe and strong building which is both beautiful and inviting, with modern and cutting edge architecture.

These new re-designs are having the opposite effect.
Right on Mercenary. Well here is the thing. To the Port Authority, this Tower is strictly for real estate and business purposes only.

We are lucky to even be getting an Observation Deck so that tourists can be apart of the experience One World Trade Center will offer. The whole bouncing back and showing Al-Qaeda we are stronger than them is all bullshit because despite all the patriotic talk you cannot escape the reality such as the expensive costs, safety features, redesigning, numerous delays, etc. In my eye the terrorists did win that day by knocking down our greatest buildings this city had to offer. It took us long enough to bounce back but finally here we are.

They destroyed a powerful landmark that people all over the world had got the chance to visit. What is interesting to me is no matter how many safety precautions they put into this Tower, the WTC will still have the extra security making it feel more like a office complex of the Federal Government rather than just a New York Landmark.

What the hell, I'll visit the Observation Deck when it opens in 2014. I went to the South Tower Observatory back in August, 1998 so I really miss the whole view of Downtown from above.

^I would assume of the base and not the plaza, correct?

I think the new base looks better now too and is more similar to the Twins that way. The new plaza is a piece of shit though.

Very well put. It's the same as some of the safety nuts a few decades ago saying that if we lowered the speed limit to, say, 40 or even 30 MPH many more lives would be saved. But then no one would want to use the highways.

As far as the redesign in the plaza the twins basically had the same kind of plaza, unwelcoming and closed off from the rest of the city. So you didn't gain or lose anything really except a chance at having a nice open are which would have been cool. I personally think they should cut having Greenwhich and Fulton go through the site anyway with all the crap going on with security barricads now. I believe that will happen eventually though. The Ports probably gonna say its for safety reason which is true and of course they can save a good amount of money just paving the area rather then having streets run across.

I personally like the new design, but I also liked the old design of the base for the Tower. I however think the new design is quite nice, and is almost the same footprint as the original Twin's, if not the same I don't think the changing of the Base is that bad, in fact I quite like it.

The Plaza/Entrance however is terrible! They have to fix that The old design was so free and welcoming, and large and fresh, open and free. Even the new render look's cheap and rushed, let's hope people can send this criticism and hope they change it back. Although it may change again.

As to the debate of the old towers, I do love the old Twins immensely, and I wish they were still here However once 2 WTC goes up, we will experience 2 400 + M which I'm sure will bring back the skylines justice, and then with the inclusion of the other Towers I think in the end it will look amazing.

And who knows? Maybe in the future they may build a 600+ tall or higher building, or set of twins?

Hello everyone,
Honestly I've difficult to understand how the redesign of the plaza and of the corners of the base will improve the security of the site.
It's a shame, among many contradictions they were the details that would made this building unique and more attractive for visitors.
I hope they will do a step back and spare money on other things to complete this building.

I don't think the New York Media knows about this. Maybe we can e-mail these re-designs to New York TV News Stations and they can air them and grow public awareness about these horrible re-designs and force the Port Authority to make changes.

Maybe the redesigned Plaza is a response to security concerns, it certainly doesn't look too inviting.

Look at how people are depicted in the first render compared to those in the redesign. People are just standing or sitting around basically doing nothing, relaxing or socialising. In the new design people are either coming or going - no where to sit and anyone loitering in the area for a while would draw attention to themselves.. ...just a thought.
