I think that someone should start a petition to stop this horrible redesign of the plaza. The world trade centre is meant to be a place where people can go to work, a place to view observations of new York and other things that you will find at a super tall tower!! The site is not meant to be a modern redesign of the Berlin wall where people where divided. I understand that the NYPD will add security measures. Who wouldn't add it but what I'm trying to put out is that the redesign are radical and over the top and people are just watching these forums doing nothing about it. No way should the police become involved with skyscraper art... that's WRONG!!!

I know u maybe thinking that if your so strong about this then why don't you do it,

I agree, the new design is horrible the old was even a little blah, plus the 186 foot base the tower sits on serves the purpose of the new plaza entrance. In my opinion there should be large fountains and trees right next to the side of the building so it covers up a bit of that base and makes it less bunkery looking

For instance, the old buildings couldn't be nearly as eco-friendly as these ones, primarily because one of the main aspects of modern eco-friendly buildings is floor-to-ceiling windows that are unobstructed, the old buildings basically let in about half the amount of natural light this building does. Also, the old designs had controversy and bad memories tied to them, a lot of people don't like that, not to mention, a lot of potential tenants wouldn't like that. Just think, if "freedom tower" was too attached to 9/11 to attract tenants, how would rebuilding the twin towers not be exactly the same, but on a much larger level?

Furthermore, the designs of the twin towers were, at best, ugly. They were massive, impressive, and beautiful in their own way, but overall they weren't overly nice. They were victims of the 60s, remnants of a bygone era. There was no reason to rebuild the old buildings except to satisfy the faint at heart, nostalgia obsessed people who can't get over the fact that those buildings are gone. Also, wouldn't seeing those same buildings constantly remind people of 9/11? Imagine survivors having to walk down the street and see practically the same buildings that almost killed them, and killed their friends. It was best to just go with a new design. And basically anyone who was involved with 9/11 is dead or is imprisoned, there's really no one to "stick it to."

And on top of everything else, this was a great way to start the "Lower Manhattan Renaissance" that's been going on since 9/11. The old designs were associated by many with a crumbling NYC that struggled to control crime, and a lower manhattan that was dominated by parking lots and was unsafe at night.

There are many more reasons, but that should suffice. This was all my opinion, nothing "official."
Good post, just one thing I should mention, the Kenneth Gardner design he mentioned, would have larger, more ECO friendly windows then the original, but besides that I agree with everything you said.

Aside from the awful plaza redesign, I wonder why they thought it would be so difficult to put the facade on the bottom chamfered corners? Hell, just use the same aluminum (or is it brushed stainless steel?) that they are using on the top and corners of the main portion of the tower on the corners of the base. But nope. All of that engineering, time, and money got tossed down the drain.

This has nothing to do with the plaza but:
Safety (I assume that is what you mean with the word 'police', know the difference) is - and has been from the beginning - one of the key aspects of building high. We don't build skyscrapers purely for aesthetic purposes, no they have a function too. One they have to fulfill regardless of their appearance. Maybe you should reconsider you strong opinion, add some realism or proper thinking to it.

So could someone explain the podium to me? I love the building, and truly think it will be an amazing addition to the skyline. But is the base really going to be that brutal?

No, it will be covered in glass fins set at varying angles and backlit with LEDs. The loss of the chamfered corners from the original design is a disappointment, but it will still be very impressive.
