"One World Trade Center is poised to become the tallest building in New York City within the next couple of days, officials said today.

Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye said contruction is proceding so rapidly it could surpass the Empire State Building's height as early as Monday, weather permitting.

"One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in Manhattan, eclipsing the Empire State Building," said Foye at a Crain's Breakfast forum this morning in Midtown.

When finished, One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Construction started six years ago.

Foye said 55 percent of the building is leased."
That would mean it is now 381meters?

I actually really enjoy viewing 1WTC rise from various spots in the city. The old twins kind of served as a navigational tool because you can judge if you where facing north, south, east, west, by just finding where the towers where, and now the new WTC does the same.

Can't imagine how magnificent it would be when done. It's soo big! ...I used to live in harlem, and can see the ESB all the way from there. Makes me smile every time I see it from far. I bet when Penn Plaza is done, you could see that too from harlem/far, since it's pretty much the same height as the ESB, albeit thicker/squarer and spire-less.

I wonder how far one could see the WTC1 when done? It's a a good 300ft taller than the ESB, should be seen from even a further distance

Maybe the towers in midtown blocking the view to downtown. If you were used to see the twin towers from Harlem, I think you will see this one too.

I don't recall seeing the twins from uptown. I know the midtown buildings you can see even from some places in Yonkers, such as the Major Deegan coming into the Bronx. But not the downtown scrapers. I guess they are blocked by other buildings.

I drove in from CT after a weekend trip, and was able to see the Twins from White Plains. But it was a crystal-clear day. Strangely I couldn't see the ESB or any of the Midtown scrapers; from that distance they appeared as a giant block.

Interesting. It might be that in White Plains you are a bit further east and Manhattan is at an angle to begin with so from there downtown isn't blocked by midtown. In fact, I think one time someone posted nice pics of the Manhattan skyline from White Plains on the NYC part of this forum.

Gosh, this construction is really dragging out now...

I was feeling like it didn't look that tall, but I loaded it and looked at it in google earth and wow!!! I felt like it was going to look a bit too fat, but all my fears are gone, it looks insanely amazing! Check it out! If it looks like this, I will definitely surpass my already high expectations. The beauty of this tower is unassailable! Its a 10/10

I live on East 86th, and from certain streets you can see all the way to downtown. It's quite odd actually, I want to say if you look down Lexington you can see straight to the WTC, might be another one though. I'll tell you next time I go out.

Well, the Manhattan street grid pretty much allows all kinds of imaginable views...

You can even fit some periodic table in there

I go to college on Lexington Ave and you can actually see the Beekman tower when you look straight down.
