Spire

I just emailed the Durst Organization about the spire. A flood of email wouldn't hurt.

Ahaha, just realized that 1WTC will be the third tallest building in the U.S., after Sears and Trump! Fail!

PS: If one day this fugly antenna is going to be counted, then for all intents and purposes, the antenna on 4 TS should be included too, thus making it a supertall.

Screw this pathetic development. The memorial looks fantastic but this whole sorry situation is about money, always has been. I am glad to hear many places in Manhattan still carry the pictures of the original WTC.

TWIN TOWERS FOREVER!

Disappointing alright, but the fact remains that the tower itself is an exquisitely shaped, and extremely well-conceived structure, and will be one of my all time favorite supertalls. It's evidently NOT a tapered box as someone said above, it is basically a series of triangles fitted together in opposite directions, creating a box-illusion, and no other building in the world is shaped like this.

The antenna never looked like an integral part of the building anyway, I wouldn't mind it there was no antenna at all. If expectations hadn't been raised in the first place with that nice antenna, I bet there would be no clamor for any antenna because it doesn't naturally fit this style of building. Antenna only look well on tapering skyscrapers like Chrysler or Burj Kafka (however you spell it), where the spire/antenna continues and completes the upward taper.

The information about it being 1374 to the roof by Vito is one of the most beautiful presents I ever got. I thank you so much for it, it is a dream coming true, the new 1WTC will be taller than the Twins Additionally, this number is very symbolic, far more than that cheesy 1776 because with 1374 1WTC is just as much taller from the North Tower, as the North Tower was taller from the South Tower

Also, I'm quite dissapointed how some people completely abandoned the building just because an completely unimportant thin steel stick became a bit darker and a bit thinner and that the official height decreased. Well, let me tell you this, the building has still the same height as it had before, what's official and what's not doesn't matter. The people condemning the building now apparently don't care about height, but care only about a number which the CTBUH shows on it's page. That is really a ridiculous sight

I agree; except that there were two towers. Making them iconic not only to NYC, but the whole world. They have really have some what botched the whole thing from beginning to now. It's not really about the antenna. But the whole project. They should've just rebuilt the two two towers and stylized them. I think people are just upset because of the process of the designs from start to finish, as well as the meaning of the site.

Sorry to veer off of the antenna conversation, but can anyone upload some pictures of the current construction? I miss seeing those, and I felt it was time for some new ones.

If they go through with the new antenna, i just hope they give it a nice paint job. The commie/utility red in the render doesn't work for me at all. This is a symbolic building, not a radio mast.

The old spire was fat, yes, but it complemented the proportions of the whole building. It's a look i had gotten very used to, and come to like.

I talked to a journalist of the new york times, he's going to talk to some critics about doing a big call out against the antenna if the situation gets loud enough..I also sent him the fury of this forum and SSP...and this building lost its look of strength into a fugly needle, so all you saying its back and "better" is NOT thinking clearly. Also are those renders even official because we may be looking at something that may not be accurate

Honestly, you guys are too freaking spoiled. Just be glad you actually got a tower. And better yet, a tower that is taller than the original twin towers. And three extra. With beautiful designs. And a waterfall memorial. And a museum. And a unique transport hub skylight.

You don't get the point here, yea it's rebuilt but is it going to look as magnificent with something like that antenna? No, and the height is only up by 6 feet which is an extremely small improvement especially for the fact that they are living in a time of taller buildings and had well over 4 years to plan it. It's disgraceful

We're perfectly entitled to be upset about value-engineering when it harms the aesthetics of a very important and public piece of urban fabric. New Yorkers moreso of course.

The building has no meaning now. To fall from 1st place to 3rd and 4th place is even a disaster. How can they say America has come back taller and stronger as it's the same height as the old North Tower and 2 other towers at the center is questionable. SMH.

Spire and Antenna makes a total difference. Spire is a architectural sculpture that is made to go up from the building and gives it meaning. *Antenna is just a broadcast tower ontop of a box like a television. Both elements have different roles, however Spire and building plays 1 role as it gives character to the building as a whole. *Durst say it will be hard to maintain; how the hell the owners of the ESB been maintaining their steel spire for 80+ years now. That is not a good excuse.*

1WTC is the most expensive office building ever built, so why spend all that money not to have bragging rights for something. You gonna build it and say what now?............... Just built the damn spire & just leave the building alone. That site is like curse, jeez!*
