From the New York Times
A tapering enclosure, planned over the mast, has been eliminated. That may affect how the building’s height is calculated.

Yeah, but you have to consider that when Martha is downstairs adjusting the TV you can move this antenna around easier.............

and remember they did the same thing with the George Washington Bridge. Sometimes less is more...............

These guys have so totally screwed this project up.

I wish Robert Moses was alive and running this project.

Btw, if 432 Park will remain as tall as it is known now, it will still be the second tallest in America because the Willis Tower is taller
The height of this tower is very important to me. And you don't have the right to question me about that. I've seen this building grew up from nothing with my own eyes. So to say that I'm upset about all the changes is a understatement.

I am really confused. Is all this just speculation or is it now set in stone that the spire/antenna will be stripped? I just have this feeling that maybe some common ground might be worked out between Durst & SOM before the spire is installed? I just can't believe that after all this time and the hype about 1776 feet figure that they would ditch that now..Or maybe I am just naive...*sigh* Anyways, if the spire as intended by SOM is dead, why not at the last minute just add a couple hundred feet to the roof making the rooftop about 1500-1700 feet? Everyone would be happy then. The Durst version looks just like a clone of the old North Tower, which is okay, but this building should have been left alone. I just hope this isn't the final word.

It's clearly an antennae, they are just being smart and waiting till the building is finished so they get less hate mail...

The hate mail part was a joke, but here is the thing, there have been several articles explaining that it is an antennae, so why change it, when the reduced height is inevitable.

It doesn't work like that, you can't just add another 200 feet of actual floors whenever you want to. They build based off of whether they have tenants to fill the space. This is the reason that they aren't building 2 WTC right now. Also, it is set in stone. Here is an excerpt from an article on it -
Quote:
Asked whether architects could find a compromise design, Mr. Durst demurred. The scaled-down top, he said, "is going to be mounted on the building over the summer. There's no way to do anything at this point."
I am okay with them counting the antennae as long as they count all other buildings with antennae's. But that would mean that the 360 meter John Hancock is now 457 meters, and the ESB would go from 380 to 443 meters, it would be a huge change. But this all shows how dumb it is to count spires and not antennas.

Technically you could say that for a lot of buildings. They could theoretically, add 20 stories to the Burj Khalifa, or theoretically add 20 stories to the sears tower, or ESB, or the Taipei 101, or shanghai tower. But, it's not something that is going to happen. This is America, we build off of economic need, not bragging rights. No one outside of skyscraper forums cares about this, so where are they gonna get support for spending another 200 million ? Guys, what is wrong with a 419 meter tower ? It replaces one of the twins, and even adds 2 meters.

How? The building tapers inward, it would look terrible with extra height.

I explained this 6 or 7 posts back. It's a done deal, this is the antennae you are getting.
