I find it hard to compare 1WTC and Shard... To be honest, I like the design of Shard. I'm sure a much taller version of it would've been awesome... But, it seems appropiate for London's skyline. Just my two cents...

Here's approximately what they would look like together. Clearly 1WTC towers over the Shard, but their respective designs are what cause the appearance of the Shard seeming so tall and the Trade Center more stout. However, I think if the trade center was built in London people would think it is monstrosity compared to its context while here in New York, we almost hope that once finished it will dominate the skyline more.

PS. Looks like I was beat to it!

exactly, I don't know why people are comparing, Unless you are the Burj Kalifa, there will always be something well taller.

This building would look better in a place like dubai or in Mecca where the Abraj Al-bait endowment has been built, a nice blend of sand and glass.

That's what they are saying. I hope so, they've been working on the base since March.

One thing that this picture reminds me of is that NYC has long abandoned its tradition of making spectacular endings at the tops of its buildings.

1WTC doesn't really have an architectural top. It has a sort of antenna thing.

My favourite tall NYC buildings have a majesty bestown on them by the architectural detailing that can be appreciated from afar. The Chrysler building and the Empire State do this wonderfully, but City Hall and a handful of other older tall buildings also show what can be done.

I'd love to see this reprised in the 21st century. The Shard is interesting as a building primarily because of the treatment of the top. I think it would be great in NYC (but would have to be much higher of course!)
