From Wired NY.

Again, nothing is confirmed, just assumptions

One may reasonably ask is that a protection of some sort for (perhaps) some cladding that may have recently been installed?
The canvas sheet is indeed the final base "cladding." This way it will be easy to repair if it gets damaged.

Even better, the canvas that you see is actually a bunch of I <3 NY shirts stitched together.

here is cladding beginning to appear on the top left corner in this photo (East Facing).

^Yeah, just assumptions, that's it.The facade should be in front of the netting not behind it,for it to align with the rest of the building.

Here are pictures of what ever they are installing on the base...

It does not seem like glass, however it could be possible glass is under it. But who knows what it really is?

Or not to see Just kidding, NYC might be far taller than London but the top of it would still be visible there.

As to the cladding of the base, if it would be true it would be a welcome change from all the delays, LOL

Maybe that is what will hold the glass, though that is only speculation on my part

That is certainly not any type of glass or frame holding material, it appears to just be white cloth. But something could very well be going on behind the protective covering.

Hi guys, I'm back from a trip to a camp in NYC, and I passed by 1WTC. It was one of the most stunning buildings I've ever seen, and its true, the pictures do no justice for a first-hand view.

It looks like supporting Braces on which Glass will be installed.

The dark black lines you see are just part of the support framework for the black netting.

The white material behind the black netting appears to be some type of protective covering.

The Shard isn't ugly and small. Go to the top of it and look down and tell me its small. WTC is bigger but that doesn't mean the Shard is small. They are both beautiful buildings.

No, it just, needless to say, makes the shard look small. Now that I point out the obvious, that is good news, since it is replacing, what was there, and retaking its rightful position in Lower Manhattan, what belongs there. The Shard is a fine looking skyscraper. For London that is. Which is a city of fine looking architecture.

I doubt a skyscraper with that height would ever get a permision in London. The planes are way to low over the center of London.
