To those of you who have never been down to the Jersey City water front:

Make it a point to go whenever you're in town. The view is other-worldly, especially at night.

i see that they are testing the lightbeams for tuesdays ceremony i think . Is there any reason why they can not put the lights permanatly in the footprints of the original towers now that the water features are finished ?

It's already on my list for my future trip to NY. I want my hotel to have that view also.

Stopping point until next weekend. I'll try to complete the core from floors 20-90 and the corners of the north, east, south, and west facades next weekend along with the spandrel spray on fire-proofing.

I did a quick calculation of the relative energies of the B-25D that crashed into the Empire State Building in 1945 and one of the 767-2XXs that crashed into the Twin Towers (one was a 767-223ER and the other was a 767-222).

My calculations showed that the planes that hit the WTC towers each had about 61 times more kinetic energy than the Mitchell medium bomber that hit the ESB. This is based on 27,000 lbs. weight for the B-25D flying at 185 MPH versus 225,000 lbs. at 500 MPH for the WTC planes.

The WTC planes may have had significantly more mass than listed above. The 767-223ERs and 767-222s weighed about 180,000 lbs. empty, and could carry up to 160,000 lbs. in fuel.

This may seem off-topic, but it does suggest how much punishment the WTC towers received (before we even consider the enormous quantity of burning jet fuel after the crashes), and why the new WTC 1 has been engineered to be so resistant.

Note: the formula for kinetic energy is 1/2 mv^2. If you find different values for the input listed above, you can reach your own determination. Usually, mass is in kilograms and velocity is in meters/sec, but the output ratios will be the same whatever input units are used.

I'm in favor of moving those lights to the pools... it would make a lot more sense.

...just about everywhere would be. Going back in time, I'm sure there are very few places left where at least someone died. Many years ago, 13 people were killed in a fire a few hundred feet from my house.

But, back on topic, I'm guessing that on the 12th anniversary of 9/11, next year, 1WTC is going to look substantially complete!

Yeap, by this time next year, the antenna will be installed, the cladding would be complete and the cladding of the base of the tower would also be complete.

Work will be on going for exterior plaza and interior in the building.

Hopefully.

Actually I have a feeling that 1WTC will open on 9/11/2013

I hope you are right but I doubt it.

Given how delayed this whole project has been.

I think 9/11/2014 is a more realistic timeframe when this building will open.

LATE 2014? Nah, I am certain it will be done by May/June-2014.

I'm basing my statement on what people actually said during their reign over Manhattan for the quarter century they were up. There was a running joke amongst New Yorkers that they were 'the boxes that the Empire State and Chrysler buildings arrived in'. I watched countless news reports on that day and the following days that frequently alluded to the fact that the twin towers were basically an eyesore in the eyes of the natives. Respected, yes...loved...no.

As for the delivery trucks etc.... I'll bet a months wages that none of them carried the twin towers images before they were destroyed.

You can't beat a bit of jingoism.
The WTC'S were NYC icons, and a sight to behold at night.

By the way, when can I get that check ?

You can get a 'check' at the doctors.

I'm sure you mean 'cheque'. And you don't get one for opinions.
