Sears was never 1454 ft. That was a misprint. It is 1450' 6.5" measured from its lowest open-air pedestrian entrance.

Me too. There are still some people working for that. This wouldn't undue the current plans--just build two twins on their original footprints. I suppose the fountains would have to be done away with.

No, I don't want them back. It wouldn't be the same. I think we should let their great memory live on rather then build them again and have some people hate them for various reasons. Besides, they wouldn't look the same with a brand new glass tower that's bigger beside them.

Well, I and countless other people 'round the western world want them back and the footprints of the original ones are the perfect spot to rebuild them. Taller of course. That would be a worthy memorial to 9/11, not like those two virtually invisible pools

That is fair enough but there is also a number of people who don't want them back and I am one of them. Lets just leave it at that. The current building is being built and the pools are there and the building is looking great and I for one cannot wait for it to be complete

Kanto, I think they are designed to represent the never filling void left by the collapse of the towers and the massive loss of life.

I originally wanted a new version of the twins, but if we built them, the paranoia that gave 1WTC a concrete reinforced base would have destroyed the open glass feel of the twins. Besides the twins would have to be redesigned with a structure capable of withstanding the worst-case scenario, and that would cause a chain reaction. IE: You make the steel columns 25% larger with 50% stronger steel. Now you need columns farther apart in the core to allow movement and in the exterior to allow usable windows. Heavier steel requires more bracing and larger cranes during construction. Larger cranes need more room in the core to work. A 12' slab to slab spacing isn't something to write home about today, so now take away more floors to allow more ceiling height. In a completely different direction: Use a concrete core. Using concrete eliminates the possibility of using some of the core as tenant space like the twins.
No matter how you look at it, the end result, using the knowledge we gained would leave us with two multi-billion dollar towers that would have been under construction when the economy was weakest. This tower is designed like nothing else is, look at the delays and overruns that have occurred and multiply it by two. The port Authority would have to raise prices insanely high to pay for it, and the towers would take even longer than the originals to fill. For better or worse, this is the the best option we have.

That's a very good point, though I believe that it would be possible to simply make 1WTC x 2. However that is not what we'll get and what is under construction and I learned to live with it. I love the new WTC and most of all I love 1WTC, the more I see different pics of it, the more I like it, even though I'll never stop to dreaming what if ....

That might very well be true. 1WTC is being constructed as the strongest building on the planet. Too bad that such standards are not utilized by the other new WTC towers too
