If the water made it to the area of the hub and went over the rim, no amount of pumps would keep the water from rising in the bathtub and the entire underground infrastructure for all of the towers would most likely be under water. The damage to the electrical systems would be unimaginable. The one good bit of news. I'm fairly sure that the subway tubes can be sealed from the site and the most vulnerable areas are about 10' higher than West St.

Con Ed has shut off power to parts of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn for safety reasons, and as of 8 p.m. more than 93,000 homes were experiencing outages across the five boroughs, with 32,000 in Staten Island, 27,000 in Queens, 18,000 in Brooklyn, 10,000 in the Bronx and 6,000 in Manhattan.

Lower Manhattan is without power between Frankfort Street to the north, Wall Street to the south, William Street to the west and the East River, in order to protect electrical equipment from the rising seawater. This area is within the low-lying Zone A, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered evacuated last night.

Horrible sound. A strange sound coming from the sky...
Anyway, I'm not too worried about the building as it was designed to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes but with cranes. Funny that last year they go down the cranes in Irene, and this year didn't the same.

lights are off, not sure if they shut them off or they lost power, but there's reported flooding that's probably why.

Rumors are wrong. The #MTA cannoy assess damage until Tuesday. It's way too early for a subway reopening timetable.

Fire in Far Rockaway, Queens. I can smell it all the way in the Bronx. Very Scary!

All praise Chibears85. The pictures I've been able to see appear to be about an hour old. The time can be estimated using the presence of working street lights and the lack of movement in the cars, for all we know there could be a foot of water on West St.

I never thought we would see NYC within the shadows, very odd.

The power outage caused every single webcam of WTC to not work anymore... We now have to rely on people who live in NYC to know what is going on.
