First time seeing such a surreal scene in New York City, i.e. the city of lights with no lights... Almost like a "Day After Tomorrow" or "2012" situation!

But from the second picture, how come the Empire State area has almost a full supply of electricity, but not Lower Manhattan?

Although Sandy was so trong but she couldn't devastate New York. New York's still a firm city.

The electric grid is made of different components, served by subestations, etc. It depends which of these subcomponents are damaged. In this case the area of Lower Manhattan received the major floods, damaging substations, electrical transformers and other components, mostly situated in underground facilities.

Good Luck to all of you, that live in the City or those affected on the outskirts as well, hopefully normalcy comes back very soon to you all, dealing with power outages is easy, dealing with 2 toddlers blowing away in the storm is a whole nother ballgame,, does anyone know if they ever found those 2 kids? Not trying to derail the thread at all, just thought some of you NY'ers would know,, Pretty damn SAD

Are there any plans to reinforce the coast line and build dams? Stuff like this in the Netherlands could be useful in the Hudson river too:

I'm guessing that it's going to take a few week before we see some progress.

I doubt there will any progress for the rest of this year...

This was a freak storm, a high tide, and a full moon to add. A thousand year storm, maybe?

There were proposals to do that a few years ago if I remember correctly...no one really seemed to take it very seriously. That might change going forward.
