Recent visit to NY (prolonged due to Sandy), I stayed at Millennium before the storm, and, thankfully moved up to Midtown when the storm hit (i probably wouldn't have any power if I'd stayed).

Anyway, finally being able to leave the city last night, I caught a glimpse of the skyline... It was so amazing seeing all of Manhattan dark south of Midtown, except for the World Trade Center lit up as bright as day... truly a beacon of hope.

Many more pictures to come...

Awesome news. I'm really glad that there won't be any major delays like on 157.

From earthcam:

Hurricane Sandy has caused widespread power outages in New York City, causing our World Trade Center cameras to go offline. Our host, The Millenium Hilton, currently does not have power, but we expect it to return shortly. When power is restored, our crews will inspect the cameras and get them back online for all of you as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience and understanding during this time.
For the latest updates and information on our cameras, head over to our Facebook & Twitter pages.

Systems the ones shown below would make a big difference and can stop the flood. We need to close these dams only with very severe storms and I think we only closed this structure once since it was built. Most other times it was closed just because of testsing.

Putting most of the electricity network underground would also prevent a lot of damage.

Also the costs of the Dutch coastal defence system were huge after they started building them after the big flood disaster of 1953 and they prooved their value! We didn't just build this structure, but a lot of other structures too over a distance of many miles! It's worth the investment. The Dutch also designed the new coastal defence system for New Orleans. It prevents a lot of damage and costs in the future, but maybe the taxes in the U.S.A. are too low for such an investment, more info about our coastal defence system called "Delta Works":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Works

It also protects the biggest harbour of Europe: Rotterdam.

This is what happend in 1953 without these structures:

Some of the structures:

Stuff like this in the Netherlands could be useful in the Hudson river too:
