Now that the tower itself is up, with a touch of antenna scaffold, I can better judge the scale as well as mass of this antenna complex, convinced it will be a present feature of the building, i hope it ''attaches'' to it well,

Hudson11 , wondrful shot, and it looks like 4 is holding it's own piece of the skyline,.........gotta add 20 more floors to 2 to sell me!!

thanks to everyone for photos and info, great job !!!

This video shows them; some are covered with ice.

And this video shows that at least one of them is a rope?! What on earth.

The exposed parts of the mast are like that to facilitate the antenna attachment & maintenance. The rest of the mast is clad to decrease aerodynamic drag.

As far as ice... Any mast that tall has to be engineered properly or it can throw ice for half a mile in the wind. Few winters ago the new times square building on 8th ave was throwing ice really badly from all its lil bits & bobs at the top. All most got hit while standing out on a terrace atop the AMC empire 25 cinema.

did they weld a plate over his signature? I knew it wasn't going to be visible after construction was finished, but I didn't expect it to be covered like this.

I guess that supports my antenna observation, it would make sense that over the years they would be moved. Also, look at the size of the guys on the temporary mast, they are much larger. Lastly, the tower of the 'crane' on the same construction image on this page is anchored to the antenna mast. I think it was pretty stable.

To thejacko5, I based the model of that section on the pictures of the pieces on the barge, I just made a random 6in diameter cable with a basic connector to make it look more complete. I'll update the connections when I see pictures from the field.

Boom from side-mounted crane being lowered to ground. Concrete work all finished.

Has anybody else besides me noticed that the old WTC's mast had a noticeable kink in it about midway up? Why was this? Was it a manufacturing defect or a construction error?

Definately a milestone of sorts. That crane had been a fixture for several years.

I'm not sure of that. Although not nearly as tall, Philly's Comcast Center is a really outstanding design.

if you think this tower sucks and prefer the original world trade center instead, this thread isn't for you.

The Comcast center can better be compared to Tower 4. I agree, it's a great design. Better than 4wtc.
