i believe this plane is probably landing at LaGuardia which is much closer to Manhattan than either JFK or Newark

Too bad that the first piece is invisible due to the parapet, though it's awesome to hear that it is finally being installed

In the lower part it is about as thick as the North Tower's but the upper part is considerably thinner. A good comparison of the two antennas can be seen in the SSP diagrams

So what will the interval be as to installing segments? Once a week?

Cranes Install Base of WTC Spire

The spire will make it the tallest building in the Western HemisphereTuesday, Jan 15, 2013

"A part of the spire that will top off One World Trade Center was installed Tuesday morning.

Workers using two giant cranes on the 104th floor roof installed the first piece of the spire that will make it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

The piece was brought to the building last month. Dozens of ironworkers were on hand Tuesday as the massive, round piece of iron slowly descended into its socket."

I am sure they will take their time with this. They will survey, set the piece, make the connections, resurvey for plumbness, then erect the next piece. I am sure it will be at least several days between pieces. Slowing down even more as it moves above the temp platform.

You're right. Weather must be good too in order to safely put one piece onto another. I hope it won't be windy too much in the following months

I took photos of these sections being loaded and driven to the site, the guys let us walk right next to the truck and at one point I had my hand on a section. It may look thin on top of the building but they are perfectly enormous in person.

Here's a video of the spire being lowered into place:

btw, does anybody know how many pieces have to be installed until the spire surpasses the temporary platform?

I was under the assumption that the temp platform would grow albeit smaller, the whole height of the spire clear to the top.
