That superintendent needs a geography lesson. "Tallest building in the Northern Hemisphere"?

Indeed, there are 42 towers taller than the Q1 tower, the tallest tower in the southern hemisphere. And two are taller than 1776ft.

There are no buildings taller than One WTC in the southern hemisphere, what two buildings are you referring to? Burj Khalifa and the Mekka Tower?

Yup, Burj Khalifa and Abby are the only two skyscrapers with a higher pinnacle height than 1WTC, though it should be noted that Sky Tree, Canton Tower and CN Tower have a higher pinnacle height too

1 wtc will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere by pinnacle standers, the third tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere next to KVLY-TV mast, and the CN tower.

The media (and people in general) love to sensationalize and to tell stories about the biggest or tallest or fastest. With that in mind, it isn't surprising the news is still reporting that installation of the steel "spire" began today and that the building will be "the tallest in the western hemisphere, a symbolic 1776 feet". Add to this the factoid about 1776 and it is likely that the general public will always consider 1776 feet to be the height, even if CTBUH correctly recognizes it as an "antenna" rather than "spire" by their own definition.

I wonder what the residents of Chicago or Toronto have to say about that.

Temporary stairs are looking great. Hope they are painting the mast sections under those coverings, but I doubt it.

There are zillions of guyed masts taller than 1776'. Three of them are standing next to each other just a few miles from where I live. Isn't KVLY-TV guyed?

From what I know all of those really tall masts are guyed. The CN tower is the tallest freestanding structure in the western hemisphere and is also taller by roof than 1WTC, so I don't like at all when they claim that 1WTC will be the tallest building in the hemisphere

Those stairs are going to be lifted right next to the mast sitting above the temporary platform once section 6 is in place. No painting behind the coverings.

Any idea why they're covered now? They were left completely exposed during their wet, salty trip on the barge (and for the first few weeks sitting next to 1WTC).

No at 2,063 feet only the KVLY-TV Guyed mast is taller than 1wtc making it the tallest structure in the western hemisphere.

There are lots of ~600m masts in the US.

I've always wondered why so much of these guyed masts have a height of exactly 609.6 m.
Is that a height limit in some states or what?

I wasn't kidding when I said there are "zillions" of them. I count 97 on that list that are taller than 541m/1776ft. The three listed as being in Auburn, North Carolina are very close to me. Two of those were completely destroyed by ice in the late 80's and had to be rebuilt. Will never forget that. A very thick layer of freezing rain built up on the guys, then melted unevenly, putting too much weight on one side of each tower. 1WTC's mast looks strong enough that we don't ever have to worry about ice build-up.

I hadn't thought of that. Guess they could be trying to keep them free of ice and snow so that they can do a quick lift when the winds and logistics are just right.

That is exactly 2000 feet, which is supposedly the limit imposed by the FAA to protect airplanes. Seems the two in ND got exceptions somehow, or perhaps they were built before the limit was set. Hopefully exceptions can be made for skyscrapers if anyone ever wants to build that high in the US.
