Is height really such a big priority for Americans??
It's not like this tower is going to stay the tallest, even with the spire. And why should it?

Why can't it have both? I mean what happens if they run antenna/broadcast wires up through a spire and attach them to the top?

Official? Don't make me go on a rant again about how CTBUH isn't any more official than any of our opinions.

Note that according to their own criteria, 1WTC has an antenna instead of a spire. CTBUH is just dragging their feet due to cultural favoritism or political pandering. It will be interesting to see if they change their opinion when it is completed, which is what their excuse is right now for not being consistent.

I don't even care about title anymore, it's the way it looks/dominates that matters most to me.

Most American don't want height. They live in low rise suburbs and complain when a tall building is going up near them.

an antenna is temporary, carries communications equipment, and is for functional purposes, but a spire is permanent and architectural (for "decoration").

This thing doesn't fit on the descriptions you just gave, so we may use the word mast.
