The addition on 1WTC is considered removable? I thought its mast was part of the building...So why don't they just make sure they give 1WTC a spire? The last 3 tallest buildings of NY have had an antenna instead of a spire (Empire State Building, original WTC, Sears/Willis Tower). Is NY against spires or has all of this been accidental? Seems like NY would get tired of having buildings with antennas haha.

The city is not making the shots. Developers looking for profit own most buildings.

I don't think an antenna is temporary...

I meant to ask if the builders are purposely creating attachments which won't be classified as spires by the CTBUH. I mean that's obviously not the case but apparantly NY has a knack for building antennas instead of spires. I guess the builders don't care about the official height which is annoying because I do .

No, Durst removed the radome enclosure to save $20 million (which is pocket change compared to the overall cost of the tower which is close to $4 billion).

It seems really petty and greedy, because it is. Hopefully if the CTBUH rules it as an antenna mast, which would demote the official height, Durst will have a PR nightmare to deal with and I don't think the media will ever let him live it down.

That's all we can hope for at this point.

Again, the term people should be using is "CTBUH architectural height". There is no such thing as "official" height because there is no governing body with any authority on this sort of thing. Also note that CTBUH has more than one height ranking category and architectural height is only one of those categories. Here is how CTBUH classifies height. http://www.ctbuh.org/TallBuildings/H...B/Default.aspx

The recent discussion here has been about CTBUH architectural height, not height to tip.

But no matter what the CTBUH opinion is, the media will ignore that for this particular building. Because of the symbolism of 1776 and the emotional history of the site, the media is likely to use the 1776 number no matter what.

Wasn't the original WTC was built without an antenna? A 360 foot version was installed in 1978. I think it was replaced later during the rollout of digital television. Does anyone know the specifics?

It is conceivable that as wireless devices proliferate, that the antenna on the new 1wtc could be replaced if it was truly necessary to provide service to lower manhattan.

Two pictures from very far away. They've been taken from Tod's Point Beach, Greenwich, CT, about 49 km. away from Lower Manhattan.

Go to the link to see them full sized.

Note that according to their own criteria, 1WTC has an antenna instead of a spire. CTBUH is just dragging their feet due to cultural favoritism or political pandering. It will be interesting to see if they change their opinion when it is completed, which is what their excuse is right now for not being consistent.
i know what you mean. but for my list i've to use some criterions, and CTBUH ist still more official than a single person which uses his own measurement.
and it would be damn chaotic if everyone would cook his own soup and using his own measurement how tall a building is.
So i use numbers from CTBUH to create a neutral and consistent Supertall-List

I see a 30 mile view all the time from Morristown, it's very impressive. I wish I could post a picture of the building from Six Flags because I saw it from El Toro which is 45 miles away in Jackson.

It's freezing today, right now it's 11 degrees with wind chill with 40 mph gusts. I bet it's gusting upwards of 45-50 mph at the upper floors, it's absolutely brutal

Me too.Even 4 WTC looks slender in here, wich is very unlikely. But the angle is perfect.
