Note that according to their own criteria, 1WTC has an antenna instead of a spire. CTBUH is just dragging their feet due to cultural favoritism or political pandering. It will be interesting to see if they change their opinion when it is completed, which is what their excuse is right now for not being consistent.
Or how much money durst gives them to refer to it as a "spire"

Like I said let the most mammoth building THE SEARs, Put another 400ft block on it, then a 400 ft Spire,, There the u.s has something to compare to ST and Ping An, and twice the Girth, just a total Behemoth,, A400ft Spire right in the center and 4 broadcasting antennaes on the corners. (there you got the best of both worlds). It would have the Highest Roof, Thickest Bldg, 9th wonder of the World. The bldg is beautiful as it is. Bring that sucker up to 23-2400 ft, permanantly. Leave it deep in America Heartland Where it's safer,, if you've never seen Sears to me it was more impressive than the twins,, twins were cool because there were 2. But Sears is what I call impressive. Then set it next to the "upsisedown" Ice Cream Cone,Sugar Cone) Burj, then tell me whats more impressive and operable?

To Swiddle, thejacko and other interested

The covering of some mast sections staged at the base is not to avoid ice damage, they will have to face worse conditions up in the sky. They are covered to protect from weather crews working on electrical conduits for beacon. Electrical contractor requested to work at ground level instead of way up in the sky.

This week cranes might not work due to weather forecast, current schedule is to get the whole mast erected before 2Q.

Can anyone tell me when the base cladding will start? I've been waiting since November, but there is still no glass.

*P.S.* A few days ago, a package arrived at my door. I've been waiting for this package for months on end. It contained a model of 1WTC that i had created on google sketchup. It's about 4 and a half inches tall, made out of durable plastic. I'll upload some images of this little guy in the coming days when I have a chance, being so busy and stressed these days.

I like how you think. I have seen Sears in person, and it was unbelievable..

Easily my favorite building, and by far the most impressive I have ever seen. The design is astonishing from the street.

Thanks for the info, Otie! So is the problem with the first mast piece that you mentioned solved?

The Empire State Building looks like a midrise compared to that monster. I like it!

Nice! You could create a thread about this in "scale models" section.
Most of threads concern paper models but yours could be interesting to have more informations about it!

You mean the out of plumb issue or the drilling problem? Redrills have solved the misalignment of bolts/holes, but the out of plumb issue is still a work in progress. If the missalignment doesn't surpass a fraction of an inch, then the problem can be solved getting the thing shrimmed and then grounted into final alignment.

otie, i think we are safe in assuming that the plumbness tolerances for the mast are tighter than AISC minimum for structural steel?

Either way, it won't be erected by Q2. I'd bet money on it. This project has been chocked full of delays from the start. They will not delay in delaying it further.

Maybe they have thought of that and were expecting it to be finished before Q2 but since they know they have delays all the time they stretched the deadline to Q2.
