I've been looking at reference pictures of Radome construction and looking at all the different types of construction, I call BS on the maintenance excuse. I'm looking at rigid plastic radome panels that can be bolted into 40 foot tall spheres that can withstand hurricane force winds.

Here is a simple plastic sheet like one.

Link
Quote from website: "Standard windspeed design is 150 mph (240 km/hr.); optional designs of up to 250 mph (400 km/hr.) are available."

Size isn't an issue either:
"(spherical) Sizes range from 6-200 ft. (1.8-60.9m) in diameter"
It gets better...
Here is a product description chart for a sandwich type of construction, the type that was to be used for the 1WTC radome:
Link

Typical Applications
3-D radar (military and commercial SATCOM); air traffic control; weather radar; phased array radar; secondary surveillance radar.

Construction Characteristics*
Multi-layer construction; doubly-curved polygonal panels bolted together to form truncated sphere.
Shell made of highly developed composites for panel consistency and strength.
Pre-preg skins fully enclose each panel core to make panels weather-tight.

Electromagnetic (EM) Performance
Excellent performance over relatively narrow frequency bands or potentially at multiple discrete frequencies.

Advantages
Skin and core thickness can be varied for optimum performance at operating frequency.
Excellent choice if low sidelobes are critical.
Good insulation value.
Panel assembly and disassembly from inside radome.
Easy panel removal for replacement or repair.

Disadvantages
Tooling required for each new size.
EM performance is frequency-discrete.
Manufacturing tolerance critical to achieve desired performance.
Joint design critical for effective EM performance.

The last bit kind of makes a good excuse, because every row would require new molds, but 20 million dollars is nothing. The molds could also be stored until decades later the radome needed to be replaced. The possible lighting problem I mentioned earlier could still be another reason.

is there anything keeping the cladding from advancing on the SW side or will they wait to get the other sides up to that height before they move on?

Welp. It's official. My New York City curse has been broken. After 5 months of trying and ultimately failing to get into the city, I made in today for my sisters wedding. Was able to see the tower from the drive in but it was foggy and I couldn't even see the top. Ill be going back tomorrow to show my sisters roommates around So ill see if I can make it down. Finally.

That's a quite "old" pic (the tower is not topped out) so I hope there is less interior work to do.

Both here and on SSP there is a lot of armchair criticism about what Durst did by removing the architectural component of the spire.

My question is: Has anyone on here or otherwise actively tried to protest about this? I realize that it is probably a small minority of people who really care about this building, and even less of us who are mad about the spire; but the fact remains that this building may be around for the next 500 years...

In my opinion, all these cuts to the WTC (the spire, 3wtc's height&cross-bracing) are really removing the integrity that this plan originally had.

Why can't we do something? There is nothing from stopping us from trying. A lot of things could be done, even if it is just going to the press about it and explaining that not rebuilding in the best way possible is an insult to the memory of those who were killed here...
We could even put out a fundraiser to raise the ten million. After all, the population of NY is around ten million, and there are sure to be people all across the nation who would give for such a cause.

This may sound like just beating the dead horse, but I am legitimately disappointed (as a lot of you are) about this spire thing and I hope that we won't be stuck with this thing for the rest of our lives.

Picture related: the glory of the original plan...

For your information, if you had been here back in March-May, we made a petition to stop this plus we emailed Durst as well. So I really hope we're that "small minority" and youre not saying we dont care because we do!

I've been watching SSP for 2&1/2 years, but I don't remember any petition. Was it a SSC thing only?
Please understand that I wasn't attacking you, I was just asking if anything had been done....

I am thrilled to see the rapid progress of the antenna installation. However, It really is a shame they ditched the radome, it really would have made the spire stand out more during the daytime and go better with the overall design. Has anyone heard whether Childs and Durst might attempt a common ground solution at some point to make the antenna a bit more aesthetically pleasing?
