The cladding that went with the original base was too dangerous because it broke in massive shards. Therefore they redesigned it to a metal backgrop with glass fins that will be lit at night. You can't have fins on a diagonal, so the redesign had to be made.

No, contrarians, it wasn't 'cheaping out'

Pretty awesome that there will be a beacon on the WTC, but too bad it's probably too far to see the beacon from 40 miles out. I know you could see the light when they had those 2 huge blue tribute lights, but just a small beacon won't be visible.

By the way, does anyone know what bridge this is in the background? It looks like one of the ones connecting to Jones Beach or Robert Moses, but it couldn't be that close...it looks too big to be that far out. Any ideas?

I wouldn't worry about the beacon's visibility. It will be like a 1776ft tall light house.
That's Bayonne Bridge, it connects Staten Island to Jersey over Kill Van Kull.

also great update, thanks NYCD

Don't worry about the visibility meaning it will be pretty easily visible on nice days, or not at all? I still feel like you should be able to see it with the naked eye on a clear day, since everyone used to claim to see the old towers without a problem.

Have you noticed in almost every SNL open in the past few years they always show the WTC?

For christsakes the antennae is gonna look like one of those rocket's MTV used to promote in the very early 80's,,(remember the 1 they would show taking off the launch pad as the brakets fell away from it, and all you saw was fire at the bottom?)) Most of you under 40 wouldnot remember this. This thing looks like a miniature version, or the part that Darth Vader ejected himself outta his special ship, in the Empire Strikes Back?? Back on topic how much did it cost to alter the desighn of the base?? Haven't heard anyone mention that, did they save $ there, or spend?

After further review, I'm very confident now I won't have any trouble seeing 1WTC. On a straight line it's actually only 38 miles away! Not as far as I thought! Agree?

They saved quite a bit on the re-design. The original prism glass would have cost a fortune to manufacture at the quality level that they needed for the tower. The initial samples, from what I recall, didn't meet standards (safety wise) and would have been significantly more to bring up to par.

And man, the cladding is SO close to the top! I'm so excited to see it top out along with the (spire?/antenna?) and base.

Actually it isn't a DSLR camera but a point and shoot. It's a Canon Powershot SX30 IS.

I bought it in 2011 2 weeks before they stopped manufacturing them. It's 14 Megapixel's and has a 35X Optical Zoom, I believe the longest zoom on a camera that is a point and shoot at the time. That is why I can get such great zoom shots. It's a great camera.
