J.R. Clancy creates custom beacon for One World Trade Center

J. R. Clancy, Ballantyne Strong and TDK Engineering worked as a team to create the beacon that will top the new One World Trade Center building—one of the brightest architectural lights in the world.

"Building one of the brightest beacons in the world—the one that will shine from the top of the new One World Trade Center tower in lower Manhattan—is the kind of challenge that comes around once in a lifetime.

For the engineering and manufacturing teams at J. R. Clancy, Inc., however, once-in-a-lifetime jobs come around on a regular basis. That’s why the company rose to the top of the must-hire list when Ballantyne Strong, the entertainment lighting and projection system company, was selected to create the beacon.

Strong worked closely with lighting designer Claude Engel through the preliminary phases of the project. “Clancy was always the first choice because they had been world renowned for their expertise on custom fixtures,” said Glen Thor, director of Strong Lighting. “Mike Murphy, Clancy’s president, and Strong’s engineering team got together on the project over the next 13 months of engineering work, and we were able to get it to the finish line in less than half that time.”

The energy-efficient beacon shines at 1,740 feet above the streets of New York, just below the 1,776-foot total height of the new tower. “The antenna structure is approximately 400 feet tall, and consists of 18 separate segments,” explained Tom Trytek, P.E. of TDK Engineering, the firm Clancy chose as its partner in completing the project. “Our component, the beacon, is in the last segment.”..."

A bit too late don't you think?

Off topic, but during WWI sauerkraut (a German word) was renamed "Liberty cabbage".

On topic: I really like the base cladding. For those who don't, at least wait until they put out the fins!

One World Trade Center April 2013 Construction Update

I agree, the base is very bland and boring. It should look cool lit at night.

Yeah the base was bound to disappoint. A paranoid waste of an opportunity.

This building looks like it had three separate architects that never communicated with one another; one for the base, one for the main tower, and one for the antenna. It suffers from multiple personality disorder.

From WTC Progress Facebook: Workers at WTC continue adding Podium glass to the base of the south side of One WTC.

Isn't the photo a little bit old? Now there's more glass in the tower...

Will the beacon be brighter than the Luxor in Las Vegas?

Great progress and photos!

What drives me even crazier than "Freedom Tower" is when people (especially those in the media) continue to refer to the entire site as "ground zero". I know it was a huge hole in the ground for many years, but c'mon. Wonder how long it will take to wear off...

I'm hearing it less and less. The local media almost always refers to it as the WTC again.

I live in Spain and when I refer to this tower as the 1 World Trade Center instead of "Freedom Tower" or even World Trade Center Complex instead of "Ground Zero" People stares at me like if I were refering to something past or offensive... At the media they still calling Ground Zero to the Wolrd Trade Center and sometimes they say something that I hate like: "... The new Freedom Tower is placed at Ground Zero, where the Twin Towers used to be and where thousands of people died on 9/11.." (I promise I've heard that).

But I think It's question of time for all of us to wear off that name and call this again The World Trade Center Complex / Plaza...

Hmmm, I don't think it isn't a "unique" name cause when I hear "WTC" this is the location where I think of. I saw and will always see this locatie as thé flagship of all the WTC complexes.
Even though there are a lot complexes in the world...

With the progress of the last few years (and what is to come), I'm sure the title won't last a whole lot longer. Being in Maine, among people who do not follow skyscraper blogs, I hear "ground zero" all the time. I have shown a few friends pictures of 1 WTC progress while posting on here, and 90% had no clue anything was being built. I guess I was referring to a more widespread, general-public scale. The original complex was instantly recognizable. I'm excited for the new complex to (sooner than later, surely) achieve this same status.

@ Zavatar, I guess it's good for this tower to have a unique "nickname", but I have to agree with those who find it somewhat cheesy.

The base looks like spongebob squarepants.

Looking at Earthcam skyline view, it looks like a new row of cladding has been started on the West corner.

That's because it's absolutely true:

1. Base - NYPD
2. Tower - Childs
3. Spire - Durst
