Not everybody is going to be happy with everything, however since it is only about a third finished, it doesn't look that good for that very reason, Just wait 'till the whole thing is complete, and likely many will have a chang of heart, just because it is in its complete form and will look better, just because of that.

Seeing those up close pictures makes me even more disappointed that the architectural skin was canceled. It went from truly magnificent to an accidental design.

Raw structure can be a beautiful tribute to functional purpose. But this doesn't seem to qualify because the form was designed for a different function. It was designed to supported a clad structure.

Just imagine if the entire mast looked as good as the tip...

I hope you're right. For the time being I'm with Joshua on this. If it at least matched the blue of the cladding above I'd be more OK with it. It just doesn't match well in my opinion.

Why not the bigger blocks all the wya up?

I was looking at the spire diagrams and it occured to me that if the Spire's thickness in blocks 301-305 went all the way to the top the tower would look more impressive. It's the thining of the spire that makes it look watered down and awkward.

That's because it was designed for the old spire design.

That's actually the point! I remember hearing him explain in an interview that his inspiration came from the original towers' corners; he loved the way they added another dimension to the buildings, catching the glow of the setting sun in a thin strip down their lengths. So he decided that in his design he'd expand them. But he maintained the same height and footprint of the original 1WTC so that when you look from straight-on, you got something totally reminiscent of what was lost, but as you change your orientation you get a whole new building. All so many reasons why the design of this building is so great

Speaking of the corners, I think it's pretty cool that, at some height on one of the first office floors (I'm guessing 22 or 23) you have a perimeter with dimensions identical to those of the original towers. It's like another subtle, maybe accidental homage to those corners Childs loved so much.

Agreed. It makes me wonder if there's an overreaction in the implementation of such a base.

I think the pairs of glass fins are supposed to pivot open showing the horizontal bands of metal underneath so it should look quite a bit different/better.

i think Otie's rendering here gives it more justice as to how it will look when the glass fins are extended outwards.
