It better be bright enough to get out to 38 miles so I can see this baby at night! I have heard rumors it will be easily visible even 50 miles out on a clear night. Not sure how true that is.

Not true. An antenna features broadcasting and receiving equipment; a spire is decorative. While the look of the spire has changed, its purpose has not. Now, enough with the talk about the damned spire!

I'm sorry for being so annoying about this, but I'm terrible with google earth. Can someone post a picture of a diagram showing what the NYC skyline would look like 38 miles away? Then if you can, 50 miles away?

I would really appreciate it if someone could!

but what's the use in that? You won't even be able to see the building itself 38 miles away.

Or at least a picture of what it would look like elevated 170 ft or so from 38-50 miles away!

OK fair enough. But then why was the antenna on the roof of the old WTC North Tower not included? It seems a bit arbitrary to give completely different heights on buildings that in many ways are so similar.

Because that was added later, not built originally with the building.

north tower antenna was added back in 1979 seven years after its completion making it an add on not part of its original design and also the antenna could be disassemble and put back together with added on parts none of these things are true with 1 wtc mast. and that's the main criteria people between a spire and a antenna, antenna =add on / sprie= part of its original design.

Er.. Is it possible that a cover could still be added at a later date? Just curious to know.

New York's very impressive! It's difficult to see 1WTC from here.

Maybe 1WTC is the same price as B2. Which do you prefer?

It is possible, but I really doubt that they would install all the equipment necessary for lifting it up there again just for a purely aesthetical cover of the antenna

I personally do not think the antenna looks bad from far away. It is similar to that of the ESB's antenna or the Sears Tower antenna. All of you appear to be throwing a hissy fit because you're looking at a close up view of the antenna when 99.9% of anyone who looks at it will be at least a quarter-mile away.

I agree, but I didn't realize how messy the ESB antenna was until yesterday when I walked a couple blocks from the building. That thing up there needs some serious fixing.
