Also a bit off topic, sorry, that's an amazing picture looking south through Central Park. Is there an ordinance as to why their aren't any taller buildings on that end of the park? Imagine the views.

Yea, I think there are height restrictions/ community preservation rules that prevent any new modern developments from going up. Howeve, I think in certain areas they are changing the rules. But the developments that are going up...especially near Harlem..absolutely atrocious. So cheap looking.

Two buildings are out of position from that diagram. One has a spire and the other with an antenna.

A lot of these Megatalls are doing it with their spires, ST looks more official because they don't use any spire just more bldg architecture to take it past 600. Rooftop level Is where I believe the counting should end? but thats just me and several others. Petrona's would be a baby compared to 1 wtc. Thanks Vertical Gotham I can't believe it's still there.
I estimated the roof of Burj Khalifa to be in a height of 747 meters or 2451 feet based on the SSP diagram and the roof height calculation method I made with some other forumers. Sadly, CTBUH doesn't use roof height anymore so there is no official method of how to count roof height. In January I made a diagram of roof heights of all currently finished supertalls both in meters and in feet. It can be found in the following thread in post 33:

It was calculated statistically. The first rule of my roof height determination is that a section that is to be counted can't have a width of less than 50% of the width of the section below it if it has no occupied floor inside itself. This is true 'til the top of the Burj Khalifa, so the second rule had to be applied, which says that a section without an occupied floor must be at least 9 meters or 30 feet wide in order to be counted. The roof of Burj Khalifa is therefore on the top of the last section which meets this requirement

Which means a good 10% of the building is just spire. Same with the Kingdom Tower and WTC 1.

Here is the link to the source story from CTBUH
http://ctbuh.org/TallBuildings/Heigh...S/Default.aspx

I love how people still believe that 9/11 was the death of the tall building, yet, every one of the top 20 is post 9/11. Only 1, Taipei 101, was started before 9/11. Thankfully, modern advances in materials, structural connections, and fireproofing keep these buildings safe as they get taller.

Yea but 1WTC won't be NYC's tallest building by then, or even second tallest, and I can name several of those towers that probably won't be finished anyway.

It is not finished. The glass has not been pulled out at the base.

I'd bet my life on that it can and that it will

As to the future's tallest diagram, many of the towers in it have been cancelled, stalled or put on an indefinite hold

That's the old base design. The new version has the corners squared offed.
