Unless I have a breakthrough, I'll make it up by rendering the base with the LED back-lighting on the base. That still render itself won't be easy and may take all day to set up and render. Now I'm getting an error message on my still render as I speak. I'll look into it.
Hopefully I'm just trying to export too large an image.
Edit: I think it was because my output was set to over 6500 pixels tall. I've been using this software for a little under a week. I'll try my best to get accommodated. I have my first night render going. I'm going to post it regardless of quality just because I don't know when I can give you guys the next one.

Because I don't want to triple post, I'll add to this message. I'll post the render in the morning and then I will add grating to the catwalks and either attempt a video or another massive still picture.

The top of the tower from a vantage point from the Memorial Pools reminds me of the bow of a mighty ship

Here she is. I'm making a similar day render, then I'll start setting up the base for rendering or the video of the spire depending on which one is more likely to succeed.

The circles on the non mechanical floors is caused by me forgetting to change the light projection to greater than one degree. Hopefully the day render takes less than four hours to complete.

PS not doing a day render, I have too much else to do instead.

In a parallel universe, I would have liked to see the World Trade Center never attacked in the first place, but ultimately surpassed in height by many more towers which were never built. Also, Penn Station and the Singer Building would still be standing.

Just got back in. I'd say that my day render of the base is around 60% done and it will take about two hours to finish. After that I will start the night render, with back-lighting. I could make the lighting any color, but I'm going to stick with white like the actual tower will be most of the time. I'm thinking of posting them at the same time so that you can compare them. I looked at lots of pictures of the tower and I decided that the glass is an off-shade of olive. Nearly all glass is green due to iron oxide. The reason we see this so well in the fins is the thickness. It works just the same as when you look at the edge of a glass pane in a table or display shelf.

Here is a teaser made when I was experimenting with the panel's materials in another file. The final result uses the olive grass, this test sample uses a darker green. The main difference between this panel and the actual thing is the thickness of the glass fins. Because I needed to get the render started I'll save that for another day and I just made the glass darker to achieve the same results.

Tomorrow morning I'll try to get up early enough to complete the first few steps needed to produce a rendered video of the unlit spire alone. If that goes well the rings will follow. I really wish I could render the whole thing, but instead I could accomplish many more things in the same time.
