Boom going down. It also seems that the lightning rod is gone. Maybe it's just the picture.

Still can't believe I saw the WTC from the Ocean Parkway 40 miles away. I knew it was possible but yesterday was the first time I actually saw it with the naked eye. By the way those pictures were taken with only a 10x zoom camera. I wish I had one of those crazy professional cameras with tons of zoom...I would be able to take breath taking WTC and ESB shots! By the way you will definitely be able to see the beacon from there when it's on. Too bad Ocean Parkway isn't really elevated because it would be one of the best distant views of the skyline.

I just looked on earthcam and when you zoom in, you can definitely see the lightning rod. Whew

It's going to be so weird yet so great to see those cranes come down...can't believe we're just about at the end of this construction only like a year or so left and it will mainly all take place inside besides them finishing up the glass and plaza. Here's hoping we get to see 2 and 3 go up very soon!

There is no way you can tell in this picture. And honestly, why would it be taken down and how could they?

He made a simple mistake. The lightning rod hasn't been removed.

Can't wait for this to finish up and for the renovation of the brooklyn bridge to finish up. There are going to be some amazing pictures taken from the brooklyn side. Woolworth, 8 spruce, B-Bridge, 1-WTC all lined up in a row. Beautiful. (let's just pretend the verizon building doesn't exist.)

I had my reservations when it came to the podium, but that picture is really changing my mind.

Still, an hours worth of electricity for a 100W light bulb in a tiny fraction of a second is nothing to mess with.
Mmmm, I think you are wrong. The energy of a lightning is outrageous, it's a huge electrical discharge. About 1.000.000 volts and 30.000 to 120.000 amperes. See this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning

"The polarity refers to the polarity of the charge in the region that originated the lightning leaders. An average bolt of negative lightning carries an electric current of 30,000 amperes (30 kA), and transfers 15 coulombs of electric charge and 500 megajoules of energy. Large bolts of lightning can carry up to 120 kA and 350 coulombs."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstorm

"A 1953 study found that the average thunderstorm over several hours expends enough energy to equal 50 A-bombs of the type that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan during World War Two."

PS: Sorry for this OT

I'm so indifferent about the base, part of me wishes for the chamfered corners to still be there but the squared off base also makes this have even more of the North Tower resemblance..

The temporary platforms on the upper half of the spire were removed over the last few days. The ones that are still there are permanent (and were originally intended to support the radome as well).

The temporary platforms lower down can be removed by the second crane.

Can I ask what's up with the Brooklyn Bridge? It was bandaged up like that when I visited in 2011 -- is that it's normal state? Or are they doing works on it?

They've been restoring it the past few years. Can't remember the exact completion date, but it was like a 5 year project.
