Need to complete cityscape of NYC!

No, it's not going to be cladded like the one in earlier renders. It's going to be dull and bare like it is now.

It's finally top-out. It very refreshing looking at it from down to the tip-top of the spire. It is beautiful.

If height was not everything, I don't think Dubai would be what it is. Dubai is just and just because of its record breaking skyscrapers..
Height don't mean everything but it definitely means more than everything else...
I am disappointed they've not done their best.
I understand your point of view, but it does not correspond to reality, which when building a skyscraper, is the developers reality.

Height isn't an important parameter in New York (or any industrialized country). What matters the most is always the Return On Investment. Money is the main driver. Floor area, amenities, energy consumption are all parameters that are taken into consideration based on need, market and other factors. Height isn't. It's a bonus at the end, considered even after the physical appearance of the building that at least is useful for selling it to the clients (but again, not as important as the cost).
Even LEED certification is more important now than height, when calculating ROI considering those other parameters.

With 1WTC the picture changes slightly, given the importance of other things tied to the site such as security, politics, symbolics and various other things that aren't usually part of the process of developing a building.

Height is great when you want to attract tourism and investments and make a name for yourself as a city. And New York, like other fully developed cities, has no need for that at this point in its economy. In this regards, look up on the internet a list of cities by GDP. Look at the top ten and see that is almost always the case. Shanghai is slightly different, with the fact that is still developing (and therefore will be increasing even more the size of its economy) with a significant amount of government involvement (which changes those parameters, since economics aren't the only things considered at that point).

So giving importance to height is laughable, I'm sorry. It just isn't reflecting the reality of things.

Am I the only one who thinks that the World Financial center complex is one of the most beautiful and recognizable complexes in NY?

I'm not sure how NYC is losing any stature in the world because our skyscrapers aren't the tallest anymore?! I'm sure most people here are fairly knowledgable to understand the difference between alpha cities and other types of cities, and I think that can explain a few things being discussed here. The New Yorks and the Londons of the this world are quite established worldwide in more ways than one so they don't need tall skyscrapers to say they've arrived unlike most developing cities where those huge towers are being built. Towers in NYC are based on economics, if a 600M tower was needed it NYC, it would be built and as evidence we can see that the new ones being built are taller and taller because land is getting scarce in the city so I wouldn't be surprised if we get a 600m tower in the near future, but again, that will be based on needs. And quite honestly I'm proud to be in a city where money is not wasted in the name of vanity cause if that were the case we got enough billionaires and Fortune 500 companies to make it happen, more than any other city for that matter. Now I'm happy as an architecture fanatic that up and coming cities in Asia are building high and it does help increase theirs stature worldwide, at least it helps giving that impression, but I'd be sad if it happened in NYC, we're quite past that stage.

Final roof steel and parapet are being installed. (Click here for more on the spire, completed in May 2013.)
Facade is now complete, except in the exterior hoist areas

Another boring day, another great NYC edit!

Today I put the two tallest buildings in Denver (Republic Plaza and California St.) in NYC next to 1WTC.

I agree too, they are beautiful, but I really wish someone would go up and replace all the burned out light bulbs on the roofs of these towers!
