They were once used to help fish dolphins in the Hudson. They get narrower as the water gets more shallow, trapping the dolphins for easy picking. Once, an exotic beluga whale made it all the way down the Hudson and got caught, which enraged the citizens and put an end to the cruel and inhumane dolphin fishing.

I remember the whale. Horrible, horrible beast!

The crane has a man cage lifted to one of the attachment points for the Kevlar guys. They could be preparing a pulley system to winch it into place.

In that black and white photograph, look at how reminiscent 1WTC is to the original twins. The south east facade looks almost exactly like the top half of the original towers

Saw the building up close and personal today. To be honest, from up close it didn't look that tall, but from a few blocks away it looked really tall.

That's true, I noticed that in a lot of other pictures as well. If you try to focus your eyes only on that side of the tower, it gives you the effect of seeing the OWTC. Unfortunately, the tapering and the corners reduce this impression. But still, pretty cool!

work is resuming on the spire, i'm guessing they're finally dismantling the rest of those temporary platforms.

I hate my first post to be negative, but, wow.

New York has some of the best architecture and best modern architects in the world, and somehow you've managed to build a skyscraper even uglier than the Twin Towers.

In some shots it looks OK, perhaps due to sheer height - but it's more imposing than graceful or elegant. In other shots it reminds me of the Tour Montparnasse, just comically hideous and clumsy. A clown of a building in a silver suit.

Tut.

The fact that it is a B&W picture, also gives the tower a silver color to the tower, similar of that of the original WTC.

you like the shard and don't like 1 WTC? they're similar a few ways
Are you judging the building based on that one photo? because that's an edited panorama shot, things get distorted.

I've now seen lots and lots of photos of 1WTC, and in the best of them it looks: big. And tall. But there is no rhapsodic moment. In less contrived photos it looks embarrassing. And what is that hideous steeple of rusting junk on the top??

It's bizarrely awful.

With the Shard, as soon as you see it, from any angle, anywhere, or in any photo: the heart leaps. And I travel all over the world and I've seen LOTS of new towers.

Interestingly, a friend of mine said the 1WTC looks like it wanted to be the Shard until about halfway up, then they ran out of conviction, and just finished it off with any old crap.

But do not be sad, New Yorkers. You still have many of THE greatest skyscrapers on earth. Just not this one.

So I know an ugly tower when I see one. And that there 1WTC is deformed. It actually looks uncomfortable, like it doesn't want to be there, it cringes and shrugs when it should be proud and imperious. What a shame.
This post is silly on many different levels.
Giving human qualities to an inanimate object is ridiculous.

I'd hate to interrupt the bashing, but the beacon is on. I made sure it isn't lens flare by checking the zoomed out 1WTC cam and the beacon is definitely lit.
