The spire looks damn good now that they took half the clutter off it, actually looks quite "mean", if it were painted white, like a previous forumer had noted, it would look spectacular.. Anybody know when the Guy wires will be attached, gonna be quite cool when they take the crane down and start zipping up the zipper....

completely agree! iv done a lot of flip-floping on the spire but for now I'm content. there was some discussion about what will happen if this starts to rust but an answer was never given. Anyone know?

Ironically, that video is in my signature.

The base cladding has turned out well. One of the better redesigning of the tower.

Have been following this thread for years now and silently watched people argue whether the design (and design changes) of the tower are good or not. Got to say my own opinion now, closer to the completion.

I think the tower is in fact pretty awesome - I love how it resembles the old north tower, yet from another angles it does have it's own significant look. The much debated spire fits the older NY buildings pretty nicely with it's rougher, almos industrial look. Will be interesting to finally see the spire lit!

All in all, I think the building is quite elegant, eye-catcher without being too pompous and it fit's the skyline very well. The mountain effect on lower Manhattan is cool!

With the original spire design or with more height the building would've been - imho - more suitable for Shanghai or so. Whereas now it seems to me to have a very classical New York look in it.

So that was my 5 cents, everyone.

Does anybody have latest image of the base of this building at the street level? I have been looking for it on this thread without success.

Rust should not be a problem with the spire... It's galvanized. In fact, painting it white would actually create a maintenance nightmare. It's pretty maintenance free as is.

I don't see it. Maybe because the communication ring and the antenna makes it look different.

This is the angle where I see an eerie reminder (on the shape of the tower) of what there used to be on the site:

I wonder whether that's a coincidense or not. If not, it's pretty clever design.

A barbershop quartet (an a capella singing group) known as "The Broadscrapers" was singing yesterday at Times Square and other Tourist sites. Sponsored by a real state investment firm, they sing dressed as famous NY skyscrapers: Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Citicorp Center and the most recent addition, One World Trade Center.
