This is a cool site to see a webcam shot of Lower Manhattan, taken from Newark. Just click on "Newark". The image refreshes every 15 minutes (:15, :30, :45, :00). Very cool!

I'm sure you are a scholar in Architecture with a very fine taste.
I'm not;i'm pretty vulgar and ignorant but want to improve.
Could you please show me a building from the thirties with such a spire,i just don't want to die stupid!....
Honestly, only people(1%?)who know about the previous radom/spire design complaint ,basicaly for something that nobody but the maintenance workers is gonna see or look at...
Anyway, the building wasn't design(thanks God) by Zaha Hadid and there is no need for wraping that beautiful spire in some ugly condom.

Devil's advocate:

The concept of cladding the spire is to be in tune with the smooth exterior of the building itself. Something that appeared more organic for the remote height. Without the "condom" the spire comes off as a brutalist addition with no regard the base structure. Whatever details are available in the design are lost because it's perched so far from view. It truly is nothing more than an ornate antennae at this point.

If there were more details to the building design that incorporated exposed steel or perhaps some ornamental framework here and there then I'd be on your side. Otherwise I'd personally rather the tower had no spire to begin with.

Man, that video was tough to watch with the volume on. If not for the great views of NYC, I might have assaulted my laptop. He looks like a 63 year old broke Dr Dre

View the building from any distance but up close and you see what in essence is a smooth shape and exterior. Of course there are traces of steel, etc, but for all intents and purposes this is a twist (and a good one at that) on the conventional glass box. Viewed from afar you see glass, not an array of steel columns, support elements or other quixotic detailing. Thus, any connections to the ornate steel work in the spire are rather superfluous. Put another way, if someone were to do a slow pan of the building from the ground up there's nothing in the design that would cause anyone to expect this spire.

I'll concede my choice of the term organic could be confused. By it I meant that the shape would have the same slender smoothness of the tower: Two geometric forms brought together seem a more natural connection versus the marriage I see now. And I say that without necessarily poo-pooing the design of the spire. I get it even though I don't favor it.

As usual though it's just one man's opinion.

Installing more Guy wires on the north side of the mast!

It's more noticeable from the skyline cam.

Sorry but definetly we don't speak about the same building.
Spires are a kind of New York trademark, especially since the Chrysler.
There is that symbolic link between the beacon and the torch of Miss Liberty.
Most of all and that's why the base was tapering in the original drawing, the main idea of Child's design was a tower in motion, rotating on is base a kind of gigantic lighhouse taking control of the skyline.
I am quite sure Durst cancelled the radom for saving reasons and it's a fact Child is pretty upset but nevertheless,i just think the new design is PERFECT.
...My concern is more about the base, new cladding and untapered angles but also about the redesigned one wtc plaza.
