I think that in an ideal world David Child would have designed the all wtc site.
As a SOM's partner he has a big experience and understanding of NY as he built many structures in the city.Time Warner center,Time Square tower,Bertelsmans tower,383 Madison,7wtc,in all of those cases he expressed in his art a lot of humility and respect for the surroundings as well as an acurate comprehension of the site.
IMO,wtc did not need starchitecture;just minimalist, inspired and honest job.

Please!

Please stop bitchin about different types of architecture!

Be happy about that spectacular tower at ground zero and if you don`t like it, you can tell us why, but don`t come with other buildings

NEW YORK | One World Trade Center (1WTC) | 541m | 1776ft | 104 fl | T/O

That`s what we are talking about in this thread!

Can someone tell me why the base doesn't slope like in the original renders?

because that base design turned out to be a safety liability. What we have now works just as fine, if you ask me

At first I was worried that while it looked good by itself, the base cladding would clash with the rest of the tower's glass, but after opening the fins, I think it turned out nicely.

To be exact, the chamfering was eliminated because of the new clading.
It would have been difficult aesthetically to resolve the clash between the vertical lines created by the fins and the sloping lines at each edge.
Mr Childs declined to comment the new design but once said that a rectangular base would be clunky...

Seems like we can't go more than a week without going frequently offtopic and flaming each other. Can we stay on topic. Chinese skyscrapers have no business being in this thread about One World Trade Center.

Very nice - I hope that the spire will be covered in white again as shown in early renderings.

I´m sorry, but this won`t happen...it`s too expensive

This will be the final design...

The elimination of sloped base would have been aesthetically bearable if the spire wouldn't have been reduced to this eyesore as it can be seen from any angle/viewpoint unlike base.

No biggie - It already looks phenomenal. I will definitely visit New York City just to take photos of this.

Wish I could do that

You are right, it looks phenomenal

When the elevator is down and the glass cladding is finished, its real beauty will be uncovered

I was driving on I-80 back on Friday, and I had a beautiful view of Midtown and Downtown. The spire is very visible from I-80, so I was happy to see that, and I could make out the slanting on the top of the building from there. It will very cool to see it dominate Lower Manhattan.
