This building's roof height should have been at 1776 feet. Adding this massive antenna is cheating height.

Woo! That is gorgeously splendid. The sun perfected its artwork at the top of the building. The cameraman captured it at the right moment from the right angle. Thanks man for that image.

Whatever you want to call it it will still be there and in a short while will become part of the familiar skyline. Did people rant when they put the mast atop the ESB spire...or the antenna atop the ESB mast. See, it is there no matter what you call it...I'm just glad it's done. Over time different communications equipment will be added or taken away. The structure is designed for that.
We wont forget the past but I'm glad there's not a huge hole in the ground in Lower Manhattan anymore...Amen.

It keeps the "stay on topic" police happy
Next week is piss off the "spire/antenna argument" police by staying on topic

finally the scaffolding along the south side of the base is coming down. The rest of the glass should be installed soon as well. It'll make the tower seem more complete.

The 19 feet that stick up above the original 1,776 foot mark (where the radome would end) were going to hold the communications equipment. That was always the pinnacle height. However, originally it wasn't considered integrated thus counted to the total height. However, now that the radome has been stripped, this 19 foot pole atop the beacon (original enclosure termination level) matches the rest of the mast, so that if the mast is considered in the height, it will be 1,795, not 1,776 feet. So in a nutshell, 1,776 feet to 1,795 feet was always intended to hold the equipment, it's just the scrapping of the radome that's confusing everyone about the height. At least that's my understanding of the situation. I hope this is helpful.

Thank you!! This is exactly what I asked for the other day! Now we can see the progress on the base. ALL panels are now in place on the South facade.

The base looks great, but seems totally disconnected from the design of the upper tower, as if they were two different buildings. I don't agree.

[QUOTE=HRP4Life;106034444]Are we still arguing about the spire/antenna? [/

Newbies like you and me come on the FORUM every day.
They feel FREE(thanks god)to speak about what they want.
There is a real frustration about the base and the...mast and i understand people who want to share their feelings.
Forums are like life:topings are always the same;there are rules but Freedom is a postulate.
I personnaly think we should'nt exagerate the magnitude and the symbolism of that tower.
Everybody want the bride to be perfect but only New Yorkers are gonna live with her and as i know they look pretty happy!..

Good lord, the mast was also designed to hold communications equipment. You really think the line of sight dishes on the rings are going to work the same as a transmitter on the mast? There are huge brackets on the upper sections of the spire to hold the equipment. I don't have to show you the blueprints/official plans because the brackets are plain as day in the finished product.

From PMadFlyer:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmadfly...n/photostream/

See the top 4 sections below the beacon? All of those boxy, symmetrical, square/rectangular holes? That is for them to mount equipment onto.

This leaves me with the question of whether or not you really know what a radome is, and what its purpose is. It is designed to be transparent to radio waves. Did you think they were going to put a radome over a mast with no radio equipment for absolutely no reason? Good grief, Charlie Brown.
