Those white wires (not the guy wires!) hanging all the way down from the spire surely are some weird stuff. If you look at the cam, there are now some kind of orange boxes attached to them, although it's hard to make out what those exactly are.

Maybe Otie knows what is going on there?

My guess (and it's just a guess, so go easy with the snarky remarks, k?) is that they're using the white wires to transport up some kind of lighting equipment (orange boxes).

And ... cue snarky remarks.

Thanks for the info, Otie. I didn't realize they were yours. Nice job! Would you like for me to accredit them?

Really nice shot of the base.

How are the fins controlled? Are they controlled electronically, and hooked up to a computer that could change the pattern quite easily, or less "21st century" than that?

I don't see the point of installing an electronic motor to the fins if they're only going to be used once. I think they just screw them in place...

This has been a great project! It's like looking at your baby photos and watching yourself grow up! We've had our good memories and our bad, but after all this we have this finished project that is just wonderful! I can't wait until 2 WTC goes up and we can relive the life again!

Me thinks the cables and Orange boxes are temporary lighting for the "Official" beacon lighting to be done on September 11th. I think they are having some kind of light show(Orange boxes that look like giant spotlights) along with the beacon lighting. Of course, I could be completely wrong though

Once in a while, I doubt this thing will ever be lit up. But I hope you're right. A light show would show the rebirth of the twin towers, almost like we were reviving them.

All the spires in midtown seem to be lit constantly, so I don't think the spire for this will remain dark.

If it's not deemed a spire (I think it will be deemed a spire), maybe Durst will forget about the lighting (assuming the strange wires and boxes aren't for the lights).

On the other hand, maybe the CTBUH will deem this as a spire because of its "architectual lighting". It's basically who decides to make the first move, like 2 WTC's tenant situation. Either an anchor comes or Silverstein gives up and builds this anyway.

The ESB goes off at 2am. I think the Chrysler is earlier. Not all night unfortunately. But I guess we'll see with the WTC

The LED boxes are already installed, so the cables hanging from the mast has to be for something else. Plus, we've seen the mast and beacon on already.

That's why I said they were temporary. Just extra lighting to put on a "lighting show" for September 11th

Oh, ok.

I don't think an event like 9/11 needs a light show, though.
Just turn on the beacon and light the mast blue. That's it.
