Are we gonna continue to talk about this? It was more than 1 year ago, there's nothing we can do at this point. Just be happy that the bottom 1368ft of the tower looks amazing and forget the spire.

Bigreach! Do you remember this?
I don't know you're visiting the thread lately or not.
I think these pictures should be the answer. Wipe out the confusions with these pictures, maybe!

whats the Name of the Skyscraper at the left side...when I was in nyc I thought it would be interessting, if the City development would also grow on the other side of the big apple...as u can see it for example in Hong Kong...unfortunately there are no bigger buildings planned on that side...

Hello.

On a serious note, yes, there are several other girls on the forum, but most don't hang around the under construction section. I know there are several from the International Skybar at the bottom of the homepage. Welcome to SSC.

That's because most of the area between midtown and downtown are protected historic areas or have height restrictions, actually those parts of the city are the most lively and less touristy. Besides, as much as I love skyscrapers, I enjoy some diversity, manhattan would be boring with skyscrapers from north to south

Just to confuse the antenna/spire issue a little more this article from Newsday: http://www.newsday.com/911-anniversa...lity-1.6020583 calls it an Antenna Spire! Maybe they did that to please everyone.

That is actually an urban myth. It has more to do with the demographic and economic conditions of Manhattan at that time.
The first obvious choice to build skyscrapers was Downtown because, well, because it is downtown, the center of the city, where land values where already high.
The areas inmediate north of downtown where not very desirable because they were industrial and tenements areas.
In the area of Midtown they build two large train stations, Grand Central and Pennsylvania, that among other things, make that area desirable, with rising land values, which became more and more high, stimulating the construction of skyscrapers in that area.

Quote:
Overall, our results suggest that bedrock had, at most, a small effect on the formation
of the skyline. Rather, developers were most affected by the other economic factors, such
as agglomeration economies in the already established centers, the distance to public
transportation, the desire to avoid being near slums and manufacturing districts and to
be closer to upper and middle class citizens in Manhattan.
That is to say, the evidence strongly suggests that the poly-centric nature of Man-
hattan was driven more by the demand for skyscrapers and agglomeration benefits in
particular neighborhoods rather than the inability of suppliers to provide skyscrapers
in other places at acceptable cost. That stated, we do find evidence that the depths to bedrock did affect the location of skyscrapers within the different business districts. In
summary, it appears that the effect of bedrock was strong enough to in
fluence the local placement of skyscrapers within a business district, but not strong enough to determine the business districts themselves.
