Wow how very sad and kind of pathetic the mast won't be lit for this occasion...anyway RIP to all the victims 12 years ago today. I remember being right there when I worked for Deutsche Bank. Never forgive, never forget.

It was a cool experience walking around the site early this morning.

And I'm disappointed on the mast/beacon situation. Hopefully they surprise us and light it.

Was there any official information that the spire lighting would be unveiled today, or was it just hearsay on this blog?

I feel the same happened on 4th July?

Looking forward to seeing it, and it would be a nice memorial, but perhaps they are waiting until the building is complete?

They were going for the 4th but apparently late submission of paper work and the ESB lightshow stopped all that.

Go to a few pages before July 4th, you'll see photos of the lit mast.

But Ghostface is correct: the largely historic residential neighborhoods of Soho, Chinatown, Little Italy, Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village are protected in order to preserve the charm and character of those areas.

Most cities have just one business district ... Manhattan has two: "downtown" and "midtown."

I think my post was misunderstood. Let me clarify what I was trying to say.

I did not say the clusters of skyscrapers was because of the the surface depth of New York's bedrock - although bedrock can buttress additional stregnth for buildings, which is made of a stone called Manhattan Mica Schist - we have almost the same rock here in Philadelphia as our bedrock but we call it Wissahickon Schist. The fact is, skyscrapers can be built anywhere, even in places like Miami which is situated on a thin plate of Oolitic Limestone over the Biscayne Aquafer. So it's not like architects got together and decided to build tall buildings only where the bedrock is near the surface.

It is just coincidental that the Manhattan bedrock comes closer to the surface in lower Manhattan and then again in midtown. It also rises again near the northern tip of Minhattan around Washington Heights and Fort Tryon Park. That is why I said the skyline of NY mirrors it's natural geology.

While the WTC site is on reclaimed land, all of Wall Street and the greater part of lower Manhattan including Maiden Lane, Hanover Square, etc. is built on old Manhattan land that was first colonized by the Dutch in Nieuw Amsterdam.

The source of my information is The AIA Guide To New York - a well respected book on New York's architecture; and I minored in geology in college. Please enlighten me if you have information that contradicts this.

Hard to believe 9/11 was 12 years ago today! I was in Toronto when it happened, and I had to go downtown for a job interview. It felt downright surreal walking into the financial district- everyone else was leaving and I was one of the few going in.

I was (and still am!) a huge fan of the original WTC towers, and I followed the rebuilding closely. For a time I was very disappointed, and I'm still not impressed with the antics of some of the people- trying to make a name for themselves more than anything. Rudy Guiliani's flip-flop, from "We will rebuild" to becoming a total fan of nothing but a 16 acre memorial park- "A soaring memorial", Danny Libeskind coming off as a total show-boater, to name a few.

But now, I've chosen forgiveness, at least for One WTC. I won't hold the antics of humans against this skyscraper, and I look forward to meeting her up close on my next visit to NYC this october. I'll offer prayers for the victims at the memorial pools, and I'll also offer a prayer for her- that she will have a much longer and more peaceful life than her twin predecessors.

As for bedrock- they anchor Dubai skyscrapers in sand, if they can do that, they can put supertalls practically anywhere.

thanks for your response! Yes, I remember those images - Id just like to see it actually lit up every night (I live in NYC).

So, i'm guessing late submission of paperwork is not what is stopping it being lit this time round?

Putting this much gear and all the heavy electrical in pools of water? Not such a good idea...

But maybe they'll bring this array permanently into the Memorial Park at some point.

Yeah it doesn't seem practical to have them in the pools, although I wish it were. I don't think I realized it was quite so much gear. Hard to imagine that they would put them elsewhere in the memorial though -- especially on the anniversary, when the rigs will just get in the way of all the visitors coming to pay their respects at the pools.
