Yep, that's from when it was being tested a few days before July 4th. Cool find!

That seems a bit harsh. The contractor is working through a few things up there that, when completed, will make the final product worth the wait. I'd rather wait longer to see the final product as it's intended and designed, than see a rushed attempt and be underwhelmed. You never get a second chance to make a first impression and I'm sure it won't be lit until they are completely satisfied with all of the necessary preparations.

To your point though, it would have been nice if everything would have been completed in time to honor the victims and their families on the actual anniversary of that day.

@wynngd The original twin tower sites are now 50 foot deep fountain pools. The rest of the site is a huge construction site. While it would be incredible to install lights around the perimeter of the pools, it would block access to them for two weeks, the time it takes to set up and take down the lights annually.

In previous years, the Freedom Tower/ 1 WTC lit up in Red, White, and Blue for September 11th in tribute. This year, it was just another day. No spire lighting. In most places, the symbolically 1776 foot height was not visible. Only the less known 1368 feet of the tower was visible, as it is on any other day. Also, there were no patriotic colors. It was as if 1 WTC completely forgot 9/11. The Empire State Building, Helmsley Building, and the Bloomberg Tower were all lit in special patriotic colors in remembrance of that day, but nothing at a tower only 100 feet or less from where 2700 people died!

It is as if all those who died and their families were stabbed in the back by 1 WTC.

Are the colored gel sleeves over the temporary lights still in place inside the tower? I honestly don't know, but that could explain half of your question because if they aren't, then they would not be able to do a red, white, and blue color scheme for the tower. The spire wasn't lit for other reasons already mentioned yesterday.

Awesome aerial shots. Wow I never realized there was such a huge park along the coast on the upper west side. What's it called?
