1) To make Durst infamous. His boneheaded decision should be remembered for what it was.

2) To demystify 1WTC. If it's 1,776 feet, we may not see something taller for quite some time, whereas if it is 1,373 feet, we will see several taller buildings within a few years.

3) Because it's just the right thing to do. The WTC, as far as I am concerned, was bungled by almost all of the players involved. Being the "tallest" with an antenna is a cop-out. What we will eventually get at the WTC site is four very beautiful (though, as in the case of 1WTC's antenna, imperfect) and very tall buildings. I'll take it. But all attempts at legacy-building should be avoided. Midtown is where it's at.
Three very good points.

I agree with you.

Simple and elegant is my favorite style too. A skyline of such buildings has "clarity" and will never be outdated

pardon my ignorance, but wasn't the antennae at the top supposed to be something of a spiral? kinda like what the chicago spire was supposed to look like.

Yup, originaly it should have been that way, however those plans were scrapped (which I think was a good decision)

Why do you put any stock in the CTBUH

This council is just a mouth piece for building construction companies. You should not think they are an impartial arbiter of anything. It makes no difference what these paid for lobbyists do. The build is what is: It is a 1776 foot tall skyscraper as stated by the builders, deal with it.

That's partially correct. Lights for the base of the spire are on the first and third rings (Level 108 & 110), but they are also on the level 106 catwalk, which is literally on the same elevation as the base of the spire. There are 24 fixtures down on 106. There are 16 fixtures on 108, and there are 36 fixtures on level 110. All of these are used to light up the spire from the base up to spire section 8 (the large diameter section where the guy wires attach)

I'm posting this with a bit of hesitation, because as we all know, very few of the projected completion dates have actually been on-time, and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up unnecessarily....

HOWEVER.... I've been told by a couple of sources that they are expecting the spire and beacon lights to finally be turned on next Monday, 9/30.

If it doesn't happen, don't be any more surprised than any other missed completion date, but if you live in NYC or the surrounding area, you may want to keep an eye out for what would be a momentous day in 1WTC's history.

If I get any more word that it's definitely going to happen, or that it's going to be pushed back further, I'll make another post.

Does anyone know when they'll start to clad the right side of the east base cladding? Because I know the the construction workers have done all they can for the left side because there's a giant elevator there but will the right side be started when they finish the north base cladding? And speaking of north base cladding, does anyone have any pictures, because I'm wondering how the north side's turning out.

Good information to keep in mind, The Cap'n. But can you show us some of your sources? I'm not saying I won't believe you without proof, but I'm just wondering. You don't HAVE to show us your sources (especially if you're talking about HUMAN resources).

When they said they were going to put the beacon in its permanent place on Monday, 4/29, I didn't really believe it. It rained, so nothing happened.

But when there were rumors about it being lifted to the ROOF on May 2nd, I was a bit skeptical because I didn't know why they would bring it to the roof first, but I believed it for the same reason; it would be a bit more "exciting" to just lift it up to the roof, and for some reason it made it more realistic. Once I checked this site the morning of May 2nd, I knew it would be lifted. And I got to see the beacon lift LIVE on TV, and I heard about it on Fox News the night of May 2nd.

I don't think there was much warning for the beacon's real liftoff on May 10th, but when I woke up I saw it from my window (maybe it was just a bird or something, and yes, I see One World Trade Center every day from a borough that's not Manhattan) and that afternoon, I checked the site, and there was the beacon (pictures of it, at least). That night, I saw the beacon liftoff from TV.

I felt proud to be an American, despite all the difficulties we had to go through before this "Crowning Achievement". The point is, we're not always going to get what we want. But they'll light it up eventually, I hope (and I really don't hope they end up only lighting it up on special occasions). I'll mark my calenders for the rumored event, and even if you don't believe it, you should mark yours. That goes for all of you. You could be surprised.

I had to post this for my 150th like. Thanks, Kanto, for giving me my 150th like!

Anyway, this is a computer simulation of the new World Trade Center. I was looking around to see what I could post for this moment, and I came up with this. (I never realized how short 1 WTC looked when it was on its 86th floor!)

And before I move on, I would like to ask your forgiveness because I posted 3 posts back to back, and I think that bothers some of you. IN MY DEFENSE,I don't know how to quote 2 posts in 1 post, so could one of you guys teach me?

Thanks, all you guys, for giving me my 150th like. I really appreciate it, and I couldn't thank you more. I don't want to be one of those people who've been year for a million years and received 9 likes.

So anyway, my posts don't really contribute for anything, I just want to know more about these buildings, ask questions, voice my opinion with friendly debates, and hopefully have some fun while doing it. Thanks, all you guys for letting me get this far. In fact, this is my 333th post!

1) Click "Quote" as usual.
2) Copy the whole quote from there.
3) For the third part, do the following:

The "Like" option was only implemented at the beginning of this year. That's why older forumers don't have so many more likes.
