What money issue?

Where are you people getting that from?

1 WTC's mast will be lit every night. I believe Durst operates the lighting on the Bank of America tower and 4 Times Sqaure, which are on every night. And it was a 5-10 minute lighting test, like Cap'n said.

I don't know. It makes no sense to add lights on a spire and rarely light it up.

I don't know either. The Empire State building debuted its "shred" lighting on July 4th. Saw it myself. Beautiful. But do they light it like that every night? No.

But they do light it up in that yellow color. And for Christmas a special Green and Red. I hope they do that with One World Trade, but they probably will.

It will be lit every night, that makes no sense. What would be the point of going through all what they did to do the lights if it was only on here and there.

By the way does anyone know if they still plan on having the red lights on each side if the rings still?

^But it WILL be lit every night, that's a FACT. Believe me dude the mast will be permanently on every night once it's officially lit

No, it's not the same, the money to put up the radome is capital cost, that is, money you invest just once in order to install it. The lighting is already installed, that is the capital cost associated with it, then there is the maintenance cost, that is the electricity bill that they have to pay monthly during all the years this building lasts, plus other expenses to maintain the lighting. You can't take the money for something that is capital cost (just once) to something that is maintenance (a continuos investment over the years) Unless of course, you are talking about the money destinated to maintain the radome, in that case, the answer is could be.

That said, I don't think that lighting the spire at night is such a high expense, it is led light that is suposed to consume less electricity and have less maintenance, it's not that it is like the 9-11 tribute of light. I bet that there are many monuments around the world and even in NYC itself that cost much more to lit, and yet, they are light every night (the lighting for the memorial downstair this building must be more expensive) I guess that just a few tickets to the observatory per day, will pay the electricity bill.

BTW, white for the every day lighting looks pretty cool

But back on topic. Does anyone know why they're testing it? Are they going to light it up for New Year's? Or are they going to light it up Monday night, like TheCap'n said?

A few of you guys have not been paying attention. The sentence before I told you about the test, I also said that their plan was to NOT light it up permanently on Monday. Please don't misquote me. Thanks

Ok, let's get something cleared up...the spire will be lit nightly. Period.

There are two guys on here (I won't name names, but it think they are both young/immature and I'm pretty sure the other regulars know who I'm talking about) that keep posing these silly questions and in general throwing off the entire forum by spreading disinformation and rumors, and getting everyone off-topic and focused on issues that aren't actually based on facts.

Knock it off, stay on topic, and quit detracting from an otherwise awesome forum for skyscraper fans and fans of 1WTC, in particular. If I were the moderator, you'd both already been gone by now.

Are you sure that the entire spire will be lit nightly or perhaps just the beacon?

The spire lit up is amazing. And nothing is more cool than a skyline of skyscrapers lit at night, especially with that spire ablaze in its various colors. The beacon, however, is what will really make it phenomenal.

Last year for Season 38, Saturday Night Live showed 1WTC in the open every episode. I hope they do it again in Season 39, the premiere the open today at 11:35pm EDT on NBC.

If you do not have a TV to access here is a live stream of NBC East, I highly reccomend adblock for this page: http://www.imurphy.net/NBC%20NY.html

They seriously need to light up the roof of 1WTC just as they did with the roof of 4WTC and Goldman Sachs. The lit antenna is incredible but the top of the tower should have lights as well so that its shape is clearly defined at night
