Banksy is right! It is a despicable building! It is ridiculous to claim that his opinion is an "insult to all the hardworking...." For Zeus' sake it is a structure, steel and concrete and architecture by definition is to be judged. You are free to take offense but the declaration of war on Banksy for insulting an "Merican" [sic] building is comical.

Despicable? Come on! I'd prefer a real spire and wish the base weren't so Spartan but the old pair looked like two grey overgrown rectangles. Is this current one the best they can do? Of course not. But it is hardly a hideous building and those that go overboard detracting it should take a step back and just chill before ripping apart something that is clearly a LOT better than the vast majority of skyscrapers built from the 50's to the 90's in Manhattan. I don't dislike the towers around Times Square built more recently but they aren't brilliant, rather conservative and other than perhaps the Bank of America tower nothing iconic or particularly striking that says "New York" when you see them.

criticizing architecture is fine. However, One WTC is the symbol of the rebuilding of a place where over 2 thousand people died. Calling the tower mediocre, fine. Referring to the work of thousands of Americans to build such a symbol as a betrayal to those who died in order to express such mediocrity, that's just distasteful.

Have you no shame? How dare you use the death of over 2K Americans to make such a trivial point? It is an ugly building period! A thousand American workers are just as infallible as one Chinese worker. This bout of chauvinism is why we are now a laughing stock in the world. It is just an ugly building, accept the criticism, register your opposition and move on.

Alright already!!! You are all pretty. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion, but enough with same argument over and over. Wanna see a better WTC? RAISE SEVERAL BILLION AND BUILD YOUR OWN. I keep coming to this site hoping that I'll see some cool pictures of the progress, but its like rooting around for truffles. You have to wade through acres of [email protected] before you find one. OK...my rant's over...You may now return to your inane posts of useless criticism and throwing virtual monkey feces at each other. Remember, insulting someone on the internet is like farting in a crowded elevator. It may give you some relief, but now everyone has to deal with your [email protected]

No room for honest criticism or an open dialogue. No acceptance of a fair and balanced viewpoint. How very Republican of you.

And yes, the new WTC is scaled back from what it would have been if conceived in the 2000's. Bare with me on the explanation:

If they were building the World Trade Centre today, for the first time as if the original never existed and 9/11 also never happened, then to be as impressive and domineering as the original was to contemporary architecture and engineering circa 1966, today it would have to be on the scale of two Burj Khalifas only with comparable bulk as the Willis Tower.

When, what you got (and are getting when complete), is something that looks like it could be built today in ANY major World city. At the time, (c1960's-70's) only New York was big enough and bold enough to build the Twins and its surrounding complex. It shocked the world of architecture and made architects re-think what "big" was. The new complex is nice, however it fails to "shock" anyone. Nor will it cause architecture to re-think itself around the World.

That is what Banksy is implying. And from a World-view, he is correct.

You are allowed to like, love, respect this tower with all your being, but professing it is the equivalent or even surpasses the impact of what the original did, is delusional. The truth is a bitter pill for deluded patriots to swallow. So I assume you will most likely avoid this medicine and continue in your delusions. Good luck with that.
Nicely stated!!!! Although please don't assume "all" Americans have that "your either with us or against us" attitude. You are right though, we are the laughing stock of the World on many issues, including what is perceived as extreme Nationalism view points. I hope you understand though, with the age of many in this room posting the "well versed and well written rebuttals" (joking), being under 18 no doubt, the words you explain will fall on their deaf ears. Fortunately though, the adults in the room appreciate your educated and well written rebuttal!

Come on guys, get it together. Let us agree to disagree on this and move on. Personally I think both sides have a few good points, and it's always good to hear another voice so that we can weigh our own opinion. It's not black or white. I hope they do light the spire tonight, but I can't wait to see the light testing on the base.
