Until I began visiting this thread, I never realized how controversial it is to determine a buildings official height.

Hey, nobody's perfect Friday's a better day, anyway. More people out and about tonight, so better exposure to the masses. I noticed they are still calling it a "test". Maybe there are some more potential bugs to work out, but I think we're supposed to be very close to permanently seeing the spire and beacon ON.

1 World Trade Center spire lights up tonight
http://therealdeal.com/blog/2013/11/...ts-up-tonight/

Quote:
Starting tonight, 1 World Trade Center will add its shimmer to the New York City skyline.

The 288 50-watt modules in the tower’s spire will be set aglow at 5:30 p.m., when they are lit as part of a test run, officials told DNAinfo.

The tower will eventually be lit every night, and should be visible up to 50 miles away when the weather is clear, a spokesman from the Durst Organization, which developed the tower in conjunction with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, told DNAinfo

I don't think it's a coincidence that they'll be turning the beacon on tonight, the day that the building's height will be finally decided upon.

There was a lot of testing these past few days. I made a prediction somewhere in August (before I signed up as a member) that they (Durst, Port Authority, I don't really know)would light up the beacon and spire so many lights before the decision day because they want the CTBUH to rule in favor of the spire. I hope it works, but the Willis Tower's spires are also lit up, and the resemblance is almost scary.

I think it's a little ironic that the decision is going to be made in Chicago, home of the Willis Tower. But I'm going to let it go.

You're right. Patience is a virtue. I was just worried there wouldn't be a test.

Edit: I see something! I see the beacon turned on! But I wish the whole spire was turned on, too.

This will be my only comment regarding building height, etc. as that topic bores me to death....However....

I think you are correct. What better way to demonstrate to the doubters that this is more than just a simple antenna structure than by showing off it's full capabilities and getting tons of press in the process? This is a deliberate and calculated move to make a last-minute impression and hopefully influence any of the decision-makers that may still be on the fence about whether or not this is a part of the building that should be counted towards overall height. There is nothing else in the world like the beacon at the top of 1WTC. Something like this doesn't go on top of an afterthought add-on. Just my humble opinion.

My thoughts exactly. It's almost pressuring them into approving the full height, because after seeing it in all its glory, people would be royally pissed off if it was ruled an antenna.

Yes it is! Accompanied by the red FAA light. Can't wait to see the rest turned on!

I wonder why they didn't turn on the whole spire tonight. I mean, this is their only chance to make an impression on those who are still straddling the fence. But anyway, I knew this would happen. Showing off the most amazing spire in the world is going to make this "spantenna" a spire. That this building has a symbolic height of 1776 feet. What a strategic (although somewhat obvious) plan.

Edit: 71 people on this thread! Makes sense, considering this is the first time (I think) the spire hasn't been lit at a time at 1 AM.

Dude, to insinuate that there's a resemblance between the top of the Willis tower and the spire of the 1WTC (especially based on your two photos) is an insult. The spire lighting on 1WTC is so much cleaner and crisper than the other that they're not even in the same category. Look at those pics again and tell me I'm wrong.

I can easily make it out from where I'm at right now near White Plains, the beacon is emanating brilliant white flashes every 15 seconds or so. I took a video with my phone but it's quality isn't worth posting
