I have to agree. This doesn't seem right.

I always knew the spire will count as part of the full height. I always said it's part of the building architecture. It grew with the buiding just like each new floor. Sears and old One WTC antennas were never soild elements to the buildings character. Each had their antennas added 10yrs later after completion. That's not what you do with a spire. When you look at the twins & sears, their antennas never come to mind as something you would admire. When you look at the ESB, Chrysler & 1WTC, not only do you admire their unique architecture but also their spires. At night 1WTC will be a beast..

Chicago will still have the highest observation deck and highest roof in America, so they have nothing to worry about.

Best thing that can happen now is Sears adding another extension to their antenna so they still beat WTC in pinnacle height.

And I must say that I am impressed at the restraint Chinese people have shown about CTBUH height rules. They have to be rolling their eyes at the rankings.

One broadcast signals and one does not just amplifies it ! one is part of its original design and one is not, one has an architectural beacon and one does not its that simple !

A wholly subjective distinction, whether made by some lofty council or by anyone else. I think WTC1 is a beautiful building but in the opinion of this layman, Willis is still tops in the US. Actually I think WTC1 would look much nicer without its "spire". Just my $0.02.

Okay, so, regarding the spire and 1776 feet -- here's my opinion:

The old 1WTC, like the Wilis Tower, had an antenna. The new 1WTC has a spire...

You could say the reason 1WTC has a spire is because the former 1WTC had an antenna, correct?

and without that spire, the new 1WTC would look a little awkward -- because we grew so accustomed to having that form factor in the downtown skyline (supertall box with a needle on top), correct?

so you can conclude that the reason the new 1WTC has a spire is to resemble the old 1WTC -- the spire was erected as a structural element which serves the purpose of paying homage to an antenna that was destroyed along with the building it stood on.

it's not serving as a communications antenna, it's serving as a structural element. it's not there simply to achieve height, but to aesthetically complete the tower. that's a spire. that's what a spire is... i think?

As a country we should celebrate that we are fortunate enough to have both 1WTC and the Willis Tower. It is nice to see a new king though and the official height of 1,776 feet is a most excellent tribute.

It's a spire.
Each design change for the tower involved some sort of spire. It's been there since the beginning.
Why would the ruling be any different with or without the casing?

It is not a spire, but a "guyed, radio mast"

ha ha ha...i cant help but laughing. Just like my old 16 inch TV with a 30 inch antenna claiming to be bigger in dimension or "taller" than my new flat screen 42 inch LED TV that doesnt come with fixed antenna. Wat a mess!

The reason why there was so much debate is because the spire was, and still is, supposed to contain broadcasting equipment which would have been covered by the radome, but now there is no covering to hide the equipment which should make it an antenna. However, it was ruled a spire because it was part of the design of the building, not just thrown on for broadcasting purposes only like the Twin Towers.

With that being said, I myself consider it both a antenna and spire because it serves both purposes; design and functionality. So, to avoid all the confusion, I just simply call it a mast.

Is every new WTC tower is going to have its on fountain. so far 7 and 4 WTC have their own personal fountain. Just like their predecessors except it was one big fountain for all 7 towers . Wonder if they are bring The Bronze Sphere back to its rightful place.
