It has begun, they have dismantled the gates so now the actual dismantling of the elevator will happen shortly.

Amazingly, even when they are on a long continuous piece of log, they'd position themselves at a seemingly equal distance from one another. Privacy?
Nice photos here!

In one of the photos above, Gehry's tower looks like it's next door to 1 WTC. I know it isn't, so what's the actual distance between the two?

Good! I can't wait to see (most of) this ugly thing go.

Originally I was expecting for this thing to be completed in March or April, but since Four World Trade Center opened right after its elevator was dismantled (still leaving a huge glass gap), I now think this tower will be finished around the end of this month or February. But don't get too excited; they haven't set a date for its opening.

And as for the other issue about the "wailing", I've gathered all of the information we (or at least I) know. Feel free to correct me or add on, since I'm not very concerned with this problem.
1. It started happening somewhere around Hurricane Sandy, when the first pieces of the spire weren't installed yet
2. The wailing may occur at day or night
3. Here's some possible causes of the wailing:
I. the spire
II. the vents
III. the gaps in the glass
IV. the external elevator (I'm just guessing here)
V. the base fins (I'm just guessing here also)
VI. the communication rings (I'm just really guessing here)
VII. The wind blowing between 1 and 7 WTC

I don't know much about the issue, as you can see.

And how would the spire create that noise? Doesn't make sense.

I used to live in an apartment complex with several 30 story towers really close to one another. When the wind picked up, in between the towers acted like a wind tunnel and it would absolutely howl. The wind blowing between 1 world trade center and other buildings is whats causing the sound.
The Cityspire Center had the same complaints when it was completed due to its open lattice crown. It could be the spire, the absent windows, or even the MEP vents.

VoltAmps does have a point. Many people think this is caused by the wind between the buildings. And I don't think it's the spire, because the howling started before any of the spire pieces were installed. And about the absent windows, when the east elevator comes down, if the howling becomes more intense (assuming that would happen and that there would be a time gap between the elevator being dismantled and the new cladding being installed), then we can be certain it's the windows.

I read the comments on one Youtube video showing the howling sound..Dear gods, the tinfoil hat brigade was out in force. Illuminati performing mass human sacrifices was a favorite explanation, along with demonic sources.

It would have been funny, but those people were dead serious.

I remember during Hurricane Sandy the noise could be heard for over 10 miles...it'll probably continue to make that noise forever because the spire is caged, and causes the whistling of the wind

They said they first heard the noise during Sandy, when the spire was not built yet.

The 'wailing' sound is not coming from the tower at all.

It's coming from the wind blowing over those two enormous holes where the old towers stood.

Do an experiment, bore a hole in some wood, and blow across the top of it.

Its how flutes and other wind instruments make their sounds.
