Because that concept was always false.

This is what the Beacon was projected to look like.

And we already know what the Mast and Beacon looks like when done right.

No I am not talking about that I am on about the gif you posted just there at the bottem. Why is it not lighting up like that now?

edit: here's some good footage from a distance. I could see it clearly from an even further distance. I think you have to be a good distance away from the building for the beacon to be very prominent.

The GWB towers are also lit for the SB. I wish they would do that more often, it looks nice. Maybe it distracts drivers or something.

here's another look inside with views from the observation levels

So according to news report, the Building will open in Spring 2015.

Perhaps Durst is being cheap as usual and doing that to save $ on electric.

The spire is wonderful at night. That should lay to rest any arguments that it is not an architectural element.

New York looks stuck in the 20th century.

With such a response like that maybe you should have elaborated more?

NY is never "stuck". It's a city that preverves the old and always maintain achieving the new.

NYC has such a wide range of architectural styles from different eras. It preserves its history, and doesn't want to look like a utopian city from 2316.

That's because many, if not the majority of those buildings were built in the 20th century. However that is what makes New York. The history and the presence of the aged architecture gives the city its renowned quality and what defines it against other cities in the world.

In fact many cities in the world have pre-existing 20th century buildings, including Australia and the United Kingdom as an example. In my opinion having a city full of modern skyscrapers is almost banal and often I find that some buildings don't even get any focal attention because they all look so similar. New York's diverse contrast allows for an unprecedented imagery which is fascinating.

I love seeing a glass skyscraper with a historical one in the same shot, the contrast shows time, history and the timeline of architecture.
