I really do love the beacon on top of the spire/antenna, however I noticed that there isn't much of a beam (or haze) that casts out in the sky.

I've been used to it ever since it was installed. I never understood why people got so pissed when the design was scrapped, it's like just get over it people.

Because the radome was something that was planned for years and it was scrapped at the last moment, and it was something we used to see in the renderings, which in my opinion it looked better. The first impression when the spire was put on top of 1 wtc was an industrial looking spire (which didn't seem so good), but i'm impressed how the spire looks specially at night, i'm starting to like it.

Just curious: Are there any plans to illuminate the mechanical floors to eliminate that unattractive "dead zone" at night? If so, will it be uniform illumination or some sort of random scheme to simulate occupancy which would make those floors blend in with the rest of the tower?

They will be lit similar to how the BOFA tower's mechanical floors are lit.

I don't mind too much about the spire but, please, don't light it up with more than one color (preferably white), we are not in Dysneyland here. It's NYC.

Never seen Mid-Town?

And I think the lighting is fine(white should its normal color). Had the twins still be standing I'm sure the PA would have added colored LED's to the North Tower antenna.

I lived in NYC for a while, so I know the place quite well. To be more precise, what I mean is : The antennae is not too bad,(although with the radome it would have been better and the one on the former WTC was also much better) but it is not good enough to be "enhanced" by candy lights.

What works on the ESB which has a very beautiful SPIRE and a coherent light sheme which covers the whole top of the building doesn't work on this tower. Durst wanted to save money, at night they should try at least to make it blend with the rest of the building.

White lights are a bit old fashioned. LED colored lights combined with the white street lights and indoor lights would be a good combination that would make it look more futuristic like this:

Just plain white lights would make these cities in the images look too dreary. This also should be combined with regular nightlong laser shows on multiple skyscrapers. Like this:

NYC would become such more futuristic and exiting and tourist friendly city to be in, like this:

Just a few coloured lights make it better.

I think when the top of a building is lit up in colors it looks nice, now led lights running up and down the building or sides just makes it look tacky

Hahaha! Joke of the year. But I also think that Manhattan, even midtown needs to look a little more futuristic. But laser lights would ruin the whole city at night, as someone suggested. Let's see some competing cities at night:

Shanghai:

And that's without the Shanghai Tower.

Chicago (which looks most like New York):

Dubai:

Imagine what it'll look like with all those building under construction completed.

Hong Kong:

Shenzhen:

London:

But the question we need to ask is, "Would New York actually be better with lasers, neon colors and LEDs?

I personally don't think so. I think maybe three more buildings in Lower Manhattan and two more buildings in Midtown with that style would be enough. And if One World Trade Center ends up looking like the Bank of America Tower at night, it would be AMAZING. I LOVE how the BOfA (which I call the BOAT for Bank Of America Tower) looks at night. And once the complex is completed, Downtown will look AMAZING.

God no. That would literally ruin the look of the skyline. NY is a timeless city with a classy skyline decorated with the modern look as well. It's perfect this way. All those lights would look awful here.

Just to clarify, that wasn't my rendering. I wouldn't like New York to be totally transformed. It would look nice, but not unique. I think New York is overall okay the way it is: brighter than Chicago but not too much neon.
