It was deemed unsafe because after a few tests, they concluded that it shattered into very small, sharp pieces in the case of an explosion or something else that would cause it to shatter. So, they came up with the method we have now. That's why the base was uncovered for so long.

Oh yeah, actually I remember watching a documentary about 1WTC but it wasn't quite clear, thank's for clearing up my confusion. I remember one part where Larry Silverstein was dissapointed because his vision was a failure.

The base to me is incredible. I love how it transcends from the flat façade to the base fins which start to open more and more as they go down. It's as if the base is opening up to welcome the people. I love how it shimmers and reflects so uniquely. Personally I've never felt that the base is uninviting, even on the inside, light gleams everywhere.

I know I defended the building as-is just on the prior page, but I still loved the prismatic glass, and it did turn out to be a big debacle. The original demonstration prismatic glass was just fine, and met all standards that it had to meet. It was then decided to go create that glass in China. When the Chinese glass reached New York, it was determined that they had failed. Because there was not enough time left to fix the problems in China and then ship everything back over, the entire prismatic glass idea was scrapped. The current glass design was made in Italy.

So while I will defend the great outcome of the Italian glass, it really was a shame that the port authority was so mismanaged. That prismatic glass should have been made in the US, by the initial contractors who created it.

It also would have showed the steel-like-tridents in the base, which would have been a cool throw back to the twins.

It absolutely dominates in that middle picture!

And the last picture should be used as an argument against those who say NYC has too few old buildings
