this is the coolest part of 1 WTC, imo. The way one side catches the light of the sun and causes the tower to pronounce itself to anyone in anyplace where they can see it. You could spot this further away than you could the beacon.

They are currently using the building's BMU units to replace the metal panels where the elevator once was.

What was the purpose of the metal panels to begin with? When will we see the two mechanical windows near the top of the building used for testing be replaced back with normal one?

It looks as though the metal panels are only on the Conde Nast floors. Maybe they were needed for something. The testing windows will probably be replaced once they are done removing the metal panels.

The metal panels were used to hold the elevator into place as Conde Nast already filled in glass for their floors before it was removed.

On a side note, all the mechanical floors with the vents will be lit tonight.

Beautiful.

I can't think of another building with so many mechanical floors ? Most have one or two below the roof but I know many don't have observation levels above those floors. The highest office floor is well below the roof so wonder if the floorspace and shape of the building combined office needs and historical measurements to come up with the final design ?
My mind keeps missing twin towers in Lower Manhattan but this building will become a familiar part of everything as time passes.

The twins had eight mechanical floors, and as most know they're the floors with the darker colored facade.

the parapet and rings won't be lit but the mech levels above the observation deck levels should be. I'm just hoping this lighting scheme won't look ridiculous when the rest of the building has its office lighting turned on.

It does look good here though (Dbox rendering for 50 West Street)
