I hate that the tribute lights are a few blocks south of the WTC, when they should really be in the exact places where the Twin Towers were.

A callous prank caller threatened to destroy the Freedom Tower with a nuclear bomb Friday night — six days before the 13th anniversary of 9/11.
The caller phoned in the threat to the city’s 911 system at about 7 p.m., claiming the device was placed next to 1 World Trade Center near Vesey St. in lower Manhattan.

Port Authority police and members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force raced over, but found nothing, law enforcement sources said.

The call was traced to Brooklyn, but no arrests had been made Friday evening, sources said.

Did you not see the size of those lights last year when DesertPunk posted the pictures? We had the same discussion last year and there is no way they could fit. Search this thread from about a year ago and the pictures should still be there. I agree though, it would be really nice to have them a bit closer to the original foot print.

I have been in New York during anniversary's of Sept 11,2001. When nothing was on the WTC site the lights soaring above Lower Manhattan were a token of respect for that day in history but now the memorial exists and much of the site is redeveloped. I wonder if for a short time in September the waterfalls could be closed and the lights set up around inside the perimeter of the footprints so New York and the world could see the exact place we lost...Those towering beams rising from the footprints of the towers would be more amazing than anything we have seen since 2001.

Looking at the windows, you can now see blinds beginning to go up on them on Conde's floors. Crazy to think in a few months people will actually be working in there finally.

Yes, I was aware of the discussion last year, but it doesn't make much of a difference.

The lights are supposed to be in remembrance of the original Twin Towers. But because they're nowhere near the footprints and the new WTC site, the symbolism is basically lost.

According to Wikipedia, however,"As of July 23, 2012, plans are underway for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to assume the lease for the MTA property used during this tribute, and to begin transitioning operation of the tribute from the Municipal Art Society to the memorial foundation." 2012 is a long time ago, and Wikipedia is not really reliable, but does anyone know anything about this?

If they were to move the lights back to the pools, they would seem to fit perfectly in the squares in the middle of the pools. Was that their original place? They're not that big, as it appears. It would be ideal to put them in the perimeters, but that might be too bright.

I'm pretty sure there are logistic reasons involved and there is no reason to move the lights. The parking garage (?) currently used offers plenty of space for equipment and the area around the searchlights doesn't look open to the public. I don't see how the searchlights could be moved to the memorial with all the equipment needed with safety.

And the symbolism isn't lost just because the lights are not in the exact footprints.

I think the lights have been on top of a roof for the last 5 years, as indicated my previous post.

Also, it may not necessarily be easy to move or install new lights, but it's worth it. 100 years from now, will people be thinking, "Woah, how long did it take to install these lights!"? No, they'll stare in awe of these beautiful lights. Same goes with many iconic structures around the world.

Also, I do agree that symbolism is lost if the lights are not in their footprints. If symbolism wasn't like that, then it wouldn't make a difference whether One World Trade Center is 1776 feet or some arbitrary height such as 1854 feet!

And here's proof that it's not dangerous to be close to the lights:

If you can take a picture (even if you're a professional photographer or journalist) of the lights that close without going blind, you can certainly look at the lights at the center of the pools from the perimeter of the pools. The towers are quite big; they're the footprints of some pretty fat towers.
