Today is Anna Wintour's birthday. Coincidence?

Let it go man, this is the new World Trade Center and new New York.
We all have our opinions and no one is wrong, just wandering why you think this skyscraper design does not lend itself to a twin. Even one a couple of blocks away.

Opened? Really? Okay, considering that there were like 3 pages of posts since yesterday. Congratulations New York and America - I've been waiting so long for this moment, the opening of my favorite building. Officially the third tallest completed building in the world and tallest in America!

Many people have said the way it looks unbalanced from certain angles would make a twin look awkward.

they just showed an awesome aerial view of the WTC on MNF... the base lighting was looking good in context with the rest of the tower.

Also, it already has a twin. It's got eight points of rotational symmetry; really two square buildings combined into one twisting antiprism. The design of 1WTC is specifically like that to evoke the twin towers in one structure.

Granted, it's not the perfect tower and it could have been better... but I still think that it's beautiful.

http://nypost.com/2014/11/04/these-f...new-york-city/

"...The day after One World Trade Center opened its doors, we can report a couple of new leases at the Port Authority and Durst Organization’s cloud-buster.

Though small, they reflect success in luring build-to-suit tenants. C12 Capital Management, moving from Midtown, has taken 3,446 square feet of prebuilt space on the 46th floor. Incandescent Technologies, a provider of information management consulting services, took 2,556 feet on the same floor.

Asking rents below the 65th floor are in the $60s. Durst set aside 94,000 square feet on the 45th and 46th floors for specialized companies’ small-space needs. The 3-million-square-foot 1 WTC has now leased 1.76 million feet..."

Or the Freedom Tower, for that matter.

I'm glad One World Trade Center is finally opening. Too bad they didn't make it happen a week or two earlier... it could have opened as the tallest actual building in town. (But at least it's still the tallest structure.)

He states in the article the spire is not functional, that the cell phone stuff is on the rings at the base, is that true? What shroud is he talking about that was cut due to the budget?

The spire was meant to be enclosed in a white radome structure:

anotherpartofme

EDIT: Per Weidncol's comment on the next page and some further inquiry, there will be FM, VHF and UHF antennae affixed to the spire and smaller supplemental antennae on the rings.

In any case, I think it's pretty silly that "functionality" is the primary element when the CTBUH decides whether or not a spire counts towards a building's height. It seems to me that, if it can't be counted on to stand safely without the help of guy wires, then it's a separate, non-self-supporting structure (basically a cable-supported antenna tower, minus the antennas) mounted on top of a building.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter, it's all arbitrary anyway. What matters is, the building is (soft) open, and along with 4 WTC, the freshly opened memorial plaza and the museum, the site is starting to hum with life again after all this time. Cheers, everybody.

Yes, it's true. As for the spire debate, you must not have been hanging around here much!
